Should I go see Paul Oakenfold?

some local guys are very happy to be bringing Paul Oakenfold to our most mainstream club here. they are decent prog/tech house djs and it's an important show for the trance/rave people still around who remember who he is

seems like a good idea to go even he isn't a great dj now?

Posted by 2~CB on May-25-2011 01:26:

eh, if you want to support the promoters and whatnot, sure. He'd probably put on a really boring show though, to be honest. Unless he was doing a 90's throwback mix.

Or he just threw on the Goa Mix.

to be honest you have no idea how hurting the club scene is here, no offense to any promoters they are all totally trying hard

"boring" sounds fine

does anyone have a recent tracklist from him? it's not really that big of a deal, just want to do all the cringing in advance

He actually showed up Armin at ASOT 500 @ Den Bosch, lemme dig up the tracklist...

01. Paul Oakenfold - Tokyo
02. Day Din & Alfredo Garcia - Theory of Mind
03. Day Din - A Place to Be Real
04. Gerry Cueto - Message (PvD Rework)
05. Richard Durand - Dryland (Phynn Remix)
06. DJ's United - Remember Love (ID Remix)
07. ID
08. Man With No Name - Floor Essence (id Remix) classic
09. Anton Firtich pres. AF Project Something Wrong
10. PPK - Resurection vs. Neelix - Ask The Right Questions (Dirtyloud Remix)
11. Neelix - Expect What
12. Normalize - Run (Day Din Remix)
13. Beat Service feat. Emma Lock - Cut And Run
14. Solarstone Seven Cities (id Remix)
15. DJ Ton TB - Electronic Malfunction

But you're prolly not going to get that, more than likely he's gonna cater to the crowd and that means HF with the pop remixes

Paul Oakenfold is good. Go see him.

If you think you'll have fun, go. If you want to support the promoters/scene, go.

That tracklist actually looks bearable.

Mehta, if you're friends with the promoters, make them instruct Cokie to play whatever he wants, rather than doing what most promoters do and imposing shitty restrictions.

As long as he's living in the US he will get a bad influence typically when artists move there. That only makes a mock of himself. Why did he moved to California in the first place? The climate?

Cut that hair and move back to England!

Most likely because of the Hollywood-soundtracks and the collaborations with US artists he kept getting involved in. Oakenphant is, was and always has been a business man.

what kind of restrictions to promoters typically impose?

Posted by roregi on May-26-2011 19:25:

I will give him a chance when he comes to SF in June.

I used to be a huge fan of Oakie back in the late 90's early 00's.

I am sensing he wants to get back to his old self. I checked his latest sets and he has improved a bit - less pop electro shit, more quality trance.

They tell a DJ they have to play a certain track, or tracks, because they or the crowd really want to hear them. Or they might explain that they can't play too hard, because if the girls go home then so do the boys. Lame shit like that.

Posted by Syntonic on May-27-2011 13:23:

^^^Been like that for a while now, damn. Yeah, you have to please everyone, crowds can empty pretty fucking quick lol. So you need the occasional 4/4 pop tune to keep those drunk bitches moving.

How do you know that's what the promoters tell him?

I reckon the reason he played the same old classics for the past 5 years is because he is lazy and fell out of love with trance music (just like everyone else). It's nice to see someone / something has given him a kick up the arse though

It's not what promoters tell Cokenfold specifically - it's what they tell DJs in general.

Looks interesting. The punk analogy means he rebelled himself against the commercial music? I hope so... I bough my ticket to watch him play in a couple weeks and I hope he plays well.

Posted by eye_03 on Jun-07-2011 02:56:

yes, yes you should go. ive seen him in Vegas and it was good. house-ish, boring stuff in the beginning and then old-school oakie for the rest!

Please, for the love of all things sacred, please don't tell me you're in Edmonton. I actually do want to go see Oakenfold, but the venue that they are bringing him to disgusts me.
