Why don't more venues/DJ's hold "classics" nights?

Since mostly everyone here prefers the pre-2000 stuff over modern day cracker trance, why not? There has to be an audience.

If Tiesto booked a tour and said he was only to play "classic" trance, would it not draw or something?

Why can't DJ's just play a mix of old and new? I don't care if a track is one month old or 15 years old, as long as it is good trance. I saw Armin last week and I am sure he could have played some awesome classics, but no, half of the tracks he dropped were cheesy, vocal, shitty Armada tracks, I am sure Armada and promoters tell him what to play.

I never understood that myself. It seems to me, that in the Trance scene a track which is older than 3 months, is considered outdated. But let me quote a saying:
quote:
Fashion is an aesthetic crime, it neither wants the absoulte-good, nor the absolute-beautiful. It only wants News.

There's hardly a DJ who's not a "Fashionist"!

i'd play nothing but the old stuff.

cater for the old folk.

DJs are not interested in playing obscure, interesting or creative music.

They're only there to play their own tracks and remixes, their friends' tracks and remixes, and stuff released on their record label.

They are not DJs. They are music promo whores.

As a club/music consumer, your responsibility should be to stop paying attention to these turds, and go to where the music is best and the spamming is at a minimum.

more? there's like a zillion classics/anthems compilations every year, for a while it looked like gatecrasher did nothing but classics nights, i think there's too much of it

i agree with this, especially for the top dj's...when they come to town it's just a predictable producer's set nothing crazy

as for tiesto doing a classics set wow that would be something crazy ha ha

i mean classics parties are good BUT not every so often maybe once or twice a year...dj's should concintrate on playing new music, not always lookin to the past

Posted by ChemEnhanced on May-30-2011 12:00:

I think Ishkur is right on the money. It seems the DJ, especially Trance DJs, have become nothing more then promo whores for their label. Its no longer about taking the partier on a trip through the night but about trying to throw in as many bombs and label owned tracks in one night as possible. DJs have lost their creativity now and if a track isn't on the pre-arranged track list for the tour then it doesn't get played.

This.

You can't move for old skool/classic nights here. Pretty sure there are two or three promoters in my city who only put on retro nights. I mean, this is what my weekend currently looks like:

Danny Tenaglia would disagree with this comment....

He is one of very very few DJs who can work in a track that is 20 years old and make it sound brand new...

The same can be said bout Sander K, pre 2006 Sander K that is

Didn't you just say in your other thread that you went to Armin's concert and that "this music touches my soul, and I can't have enough." That doesn't sound like something someone who didn't enjoy half the show would've said. Make up your mind.

plenty of classic nights in the uk. There's probably as many as there possibly could be. Any more and they wouldn't do very well as people only wanna hear a night of pure classics once or twice a year.

Posted by Rodri Santos on May-31-2011 15:03:

people aren't into edm, a 1 year old track for them is obscure because they only want to hear what they've on their ipod as a 64kbps mp3, dj will play it @128kbps on a mixer set to mono.

This is the current edm scene if you go to the average club

Actually, I could find at least one example of a recent set (2008) in which Tisto played (nearly) nothing but classics:

29-02-08
Elements Of Life DVD Release Party @ Indig02 Arena London, England

01 Signalrunners Recoil2 (Mat Zo Remix)
02 Utah Saints Lost Vagueness (M6 Bootleg)
03 ID
04 Oliver Moldan vs. Harada Fortune Cookie (Jerome Isma-Ae Remix)
05 Arno Cost & Norman Doray Apocalypse
06 Lustral & Terry Bones vs. Karen Overton Put Your Satellite Around Me (Bootleg Remix)
07 Zoo Brazil Crossroads
08 Solar Stone Solarcoaster (Midway Remix)
09 Insigma Open Our Eyes (Insigma Mix)
10 The Thrillseekers Present Hydra Affinity (Thrillseekers Dub)
11 The Quest C # Sharp
12 Fire & Ice Souvenir de Chine
13 Schiller Das Glockenspiel (Humate Remix)
14 Cloud 69 Sixty Nine Ways
15 Kamaya Painters Endless Wave
16 Hidden Sound System I Know
17 Rank 1 Airwave
18 DJ Tisto Magik Journey
19 Push Universal Nation (Live @ Club Illusion Mix)
20 Skin Faithfulness (Tisto Remix)
21 Tisto & Junkie XL Obsession
22 Salt Tank Eugina (Michael Woods Remix)

26 Fred Baker vs. Nyram Confirmation

28 Tisto Nyana (T4L Remix)
29 Push Till We Meet Again
30 Randy Katana In Silence (Txitxarro Mix)

It started with a few new tracks, but after that it looks pretty sweet.

I doubt this tracklist reflects the kind of set you'll hear today. 2008 is not really what the scene is like right now. Yes all that Electro House was coming out more and more around that time, but I don't think House was as pop on the radio at that time. Maybe you guys can reinforce this?

Now, the majority of pop I hear on the radio is pop House. I think this crowd is making their way into the dance scene, and this is the change we are seeing. This 'general crowd' typically can't handle instrumental music to my knowledge. They need the vocals for constant stimulus.

I am happy to be playing a few old school Goa/psytrance sets at various Canadian festivals this summer. Open Mind in Quebec has an entire night of old school programming on the main stage. I wouldn't expect to see a lot of this going on at the superclubs and gigantic festivals... but if you go looking you'll probably find music lovers with an interest in the timeless classics.

Two good resources if you're into the old school Goa vibe:

every time Ive heard carl cox lately he plays a mix of classics and new stuff but it hasnt been a good mix, more hits like yeke yeke etc

to me, theres a difference between classics and hits but not many djs seem to distinguish between the two.

And here's the second problem with a classic night:

Most people misinterpret classic to mean "old stuff that's popular", where what they should be playing is "old stuff that's good".

There's some venn overlapping, but generally I'm not interested in music I already fucking know. When I go to an oldskool night, I want to hear shit I may have overlooked. Going to a trance classics night just feels like a bullshit copout because there's no ingenuity in the set list, its just a top ten list from 1998.

If I could give two pieces of advice for every DJ, its:

1) Avoid your own/friends/label's music
2) Avoid popular music

Get original. Get inventive. Play obscure shit no one has heard or knows about. And do it in a fresh and unusual way.

& Well f*cking put!

Totally agreed with you on those points, Ishkur. The old school hit parade is not what it is about... particularly not when there are so many great but overlooked songs from years ago.

Posted by JonDC on Jun-02-2011 09:17:

I think the reason is probably because most classics nights are just an excuse for lazy over-the-hill DJs like John Kelly to play Fire Wire and numerous other shit old tunes in no particular order. I've only been to a handful to trance classics nights that were remotely inspirational.

I wish more people thought things through like Ishkur does, instead of just reaching for the easiest thing on the shelf...

whyyoustarteddancingtotechnointhefirstplace by WestsideWax

Tracklist:

1. Larkin' About - Terry Mitchell - Dark House Music
2. Untitled (A1) Convextion Matrix
3. Untitled (B1) Steve Bicknell Lost Recordings
4. Why - Trakhead Steve Dust Traxx
5. Agito Combustible Combustible
6. Blockkk Takaaki Itoh Electracom
7. Dark Corridor Scan 7 Tresor
8. Gimme Da' Drumz Track Assassin Catalyst
9. Harmonics Swizzle Styx Holzplatten
10. We Know It (Kevin Saunderson mix) - Wee Papa Girl Rappers Jive
11. Energy Robot DJs Underground
12. Surface Noise Planetary Assault Systems Peacefrog
13. I'm Hot For You (Crawlspace Unity Mix) L'll Louis SPG Music
14 ?? - Cabana white label
15. Deep N Da Groove (Greg Stafford Remix 1 Edit) Blake Baxter Tresor
16. Seven - Apathism U-Turn
17. Hurricane (Mix #1) DJ Emily white label
18. Envelope (Immersion remix) G-man - Swim ~
19. Reflections Aubrey Solid Groove
20. Untitled (A1) Convextion Matrix

Now, about 90% of the tracklist is pre-2000 (with a couple being pre-1990), but unless you were actually around during that time or are a younger, ardent crate-digger, you probably wouldn't recognize most of what's on this mix. I've even played out sets like this one to younger (I'm in my 40s), largely un-EDM-educated crowds and had the dancefloor bumpin' the entire time. But the majority of North American electronic music fans are bandwagoners latching on to the latest and greatest - it's like saying you love Jazz, but only listen to Diana Krall and anything produced after her.

Suffice to say, there's been a shitload of excellent electronic music released over the past 40 years - those who have the patience to look past conveniently packaged Beatport/Juno/RA top ten lists will find a veritable treasure-trove of outstanding and unique material is there for the taking.
