what are the best soft synths that make nice and fat strings and pad sounds? I've tried pro 52 and FM7, they aren't too bad but looking for something better.

Well you're with the right software company...try native instruments absynth..very useable presets even...works as vst plugin so you can use it with Fruityloops or Cubase, etc...
