Full-on psy-trance is getting respectable again.

Discuss.

Posted by Redd on Jul-05-2011 11:40:

define respectable

Posted by Domesticated on Jul-05-2011 11:48:

No guitars, no shitty vocoded vocals, no bullshit trance cracker melodies. Proper composition rather than a bassline with a rubbish patchwork of weird, unrelated samples splashed on top to form "progression".

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jul-05-2011 11:52:

Define full-on.

Posted by Trancefxs on Jul-05-2011 12:33:

Was expecting some Youtube videos

Posted by Magadansky on Jul-05-2011 12:40:

Or some names that produce such full-on (not following it so much).

Posted by FactorZ on Jul-05-2011 12:45:

I think the appeal of psy is growing slightly due to complete failure of regular trance music, but need to know what exactly you are referring to before commenting further.

None of this is game changing stuff. Apart from perhaps Magnus, they're all sticking to an established and hackneyed formula. Frankly though, I'm just glad to hear some serious sounds make a comeback, even if they are derivative.

Like, where the hell are new albums from Headroom, Zen Mechanics and Burn In Noise? All three of them presented brilliant, creative albums in 2008 and since then they've done little more than remix and tour.

Posted by rdevito on Jul-05-2011 13:57:

Yeah, i really liked the new Magnus album.

Psy Trance Full On is my favorite style of EDM and there are always nice stuff being released

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jul-05-2011 14:29:

Are you really calling that Zen Mechanics album brilliant and creative?

Posted by klappa on Jul-05-2011 15:21:

Psy-trance is the most disgusting thing ever existed and i blame John Fleming for it.

I really like his White Label series i always saw them as good full-on trance fillers but his White Label Republic from 2005 just make me cringe.

It was a solid album. It's very difficult to balance out the morning and full-on sound so I have to say that in terms of albums, Zen Mechanics did a really good job (I can give you examples of when it was kind of meh if you'd like). Another mention of that has to go to Sonic Species; they really hit the spot when it comes to balancing out both and could explain why they've worked with Zen Mechanics on some tracks.

Brilliant and creative... well, you be the judge.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jul-05-2011 16:16:

Solid is fair, but the overwhelming impression I took from it was that most of the tracks were 2-3 minutes longer than they needed to be.

Wow, seriously? I hear as good as no difference in style between the two compilations you mentioned.

Full on psy sucks, pretty much what killed GOA music

That's patently incorrect. Full-on psy was created because Goa trance had become ostentatious and crap. Its pumping bass lines and stark melodies were a direct reaction to Goa's excessiveness.

Please, don't post Progressive Psytrance, when you want to discuss Full-On!

This is Full-On:

And nobody should even bother posting stuff below 145bpm...

There is a LOT of full-on psytrance being produced these days so it is difficult to make generalizations... but as with any style of music with a large volume of releases you are bound to find some good stuff if you go digging (and, on the other hand, it won't be hard to find crimes against humanity either).

Here are a few recent full-on freebies that I would recommend to TAs:
http://www.ektoplazm.com/2011/psyco...rallel-universe
http://www.ektoplazm.com/2011/aquila-gain-control
http://www.ektoplazm.com/2011/overdream-soundprints

As for commercial acts... try out new releases by Art Of Existence (Wizack Twizack side project), DuoTekk (Tranan & Ibojima), Braincell (one half Rastaliens), Man Machine (Excizen side project), and Ovnimoon. All quality IMO.

I like fullon when it is executed well enough.
I agree with people here that many if not most tracks are lame and cheesy.

Some of my faves:

How can something that was not respectable in the first place become respectable again?

Posted by Adam420 on Jul-07-2011 00:58:

I don't listen to psy anymore (haven't for a about 6-7 years now) but my friend keeps going on about forest psy....what's that all about? Or did he just make that up?

Magadansky has a forest psy set. It's defined by darker, more sinister melodies and sound structures. It kinda borrows the flow from goa and the energy from full-on.

There are only a couple commercial full-on releases I've listened to in the past year and I haven't been impressed. I'll check out some of the recommendations in this thread a little later.

This is more on the Goa side of Full-On from 2008:

03 - Wizack Twizack - Intelligent by Wizack_Twizack

I especially like it, because it has so little breakdown inside... A pure trancer...
