Baseball fan tries to fetch ball, falls to his death
Accidents happen. Some are fatal. But few are so unfortunate as to resemble something from the Perry Bible Fellowship.
Seeing the guy fall head first to his death is itself very shocking, but the more I think about it, the worse I feel about his 6-year-old son watching his father's demise like that - and originally for his own benefit. I can't even begin to imagine what sort of thoughts have been racing through the player's head ever since. Only one question comes to mind as I read about this: Why the hell aren't there safety nets in ballparks?!

The family appreciates your thoughts, kind words, prayers and asks that you respect their privacy during this difficult time." There is also concern for Josh Hamilton, the player who tossed the ball. He's battled his way back from addiction, and now has to deal with potential feelings of guilt over what happened. "I can't imagine how the Stone family is feeling and my heart, my sympathies and prayers go out to them," Hamilton said. At last night's game, with flags flying at half staff, players and fans paid silent tribute. "We ask that all fans could please rise and please remove your caps," the announcement said. Rangers team president Nolan Ryan said at a press conference that the tragedy "was one of the saddest things I've ever seen in a ballpark. It goes down to the basic roots of who we are and what we stand for." He said Thursday night that Hamilton was "very distraught over this, as the entire team is," and today Ryan said that the players would be offered counseling, and if any player "felt they needed some time away, we would certainly be open to that." This isn't the first accident at the Rangers' stadium. Last year, another fan fell reaching for a ball and fractured his skull. Ryan said a study had been done last year of the ballpark's railings after the fan suffered serious injuries in the fall. "They exceeded code," he said. "Because of that ... we felt what we had was adequate. "We're going to look into anything we can do to make our stands safe for our fans," he said. I was watching that game live . Stadiums usually have nets behind home plate, and there was even an incident a few years back when a fan jumped into the net on purpose. I think there aren't any nets because they tend to trust people not to go leaning out over railings like that. I don't know what kind of person would take that kind of a risk leaning that far out over a 20 foot drop. These kind of things rarely ever happen because most people wouldn't have done that. I think having nets there would actually make it more likely for someone to fall because they literally have a safety net.
The really sad thing is that the moment before he fell, he was probably indescribably happy for having caught the ball for his son.

I read some other story today that the guy that threw the ball into the crowd which led to that guy's death, Josh Hamilton, subsequently the day after hit a foul ball that him some guy in the head for which he had to be hospitalized and receive stitches

Sad story but the sports media have covered this story to death. One of those freak accidents but if you watch baseball, fans are idiots, they regularly lean over the wall, and fight over foul balls, its a surprise this doesn't happen more often. Remember the douche who cost the Cubs the world series? It's a freaking ball, if you don't catch it, its not the end of the world.
this all would have been avoided if he just bought some shitty 2 dollar baseball, brought it with him to the game and pretended to catch it. the kid wouldn't know the difference
What about romanticizing a son who wanted to achieve something his father can't.

The railings in baseball stadiums tend to be just a little more than knee-high. I imagined something like this would happen eventually. It's especially unfortunate because from watching the video it looks like he could have easily caught himself if he'd just let go of the ball. either by reaching out to the fence in front of him, or reaching back to catch the bar behind him. Even if it had just been enough to turn him in the air... Mostly, I think those railings need to be built taller.
