-- car dealerships are snake as ****
car dealerships are snake as ****
seriously, i just brought my car in to get some oil changed and a part replaced and the dude comes back to me with his little clipboard and is like
"uhh yeahhh, we need to replace some filters and shit, is it cool to charge you"
since im a fucking retard about cars and know shit (should have taken shop) i blindly sign my name.
like not more then 10 mintues later he goes to a couple and AGAIN with the clipboard he literally said that exact same thing to them.
pretty sure thats the hustle of the month and i just took the bait.
tl;dr - why cant car dealerships be a friendly place rather then a bunch of fucking sharks.
god damn
Because it's a business. They know about cars and you don't, so it's fairly easy for them to trick uninformed people into paying for things they don't need. That's why you should take your car to a local garage instead of a dealership. The most common trick is suggesting you get your oil changed every 3,000 miles. Most cars don't require an oil change for 5-6k.

yeah man did you bring it to Jiffy Lube or to the dealership itself? even the local Jiffy Lube places can be a hussle too. if you're a retard when it comes to cars, ask your friends who know stuff; that's what I do.

They're up-selling. Like what srussell0018 said, it's a business. Probably sold you a cabin air filter, which you most likely needed. A lot of people overlook that shit. My automotive instructor said the inside of a car is 6x more polluted than outside air.
Most auto techs are straight forward, you think they're scamming you but they're not. My teach says it's those 10% that give us auto techs a bad name... :/
unfortunate that you got taken like that, it does happen quite a bit.
i was visiting a mechanic friend of mine while he was at work one time.
he was finishing up a task and i was looking around while waiting.
came upon a 55 gal drum full of nuts, bolts, etc- all of different sizes and material (steel, aluminum, etc).
i asked him what that was.
he said, and i quote-
"when we put something back together and have extra parts, we toss them in that."
needless to say, i almost always do the maintenance on my vehicles myself. this way i make sure that the parts are high-quality (eg. not an oil filter with an element weaker than a paper towel)
and it is done right.
you end up saving lots of money, that is if you have the time and patience to do it.
decent tools are a good investment. you don't have to break the bank by getting snap-on brand, but don't waste your money getting china surplus crap that will break the first time you use it.
you will also need this;

or

yeah it also doesnt hurt to have a relative/family member you can trust that just so happens to own a garage.
my story - some yrs back the front passenger side headlight on my car went out, took it to a Shell gas station garage and they said i'd have to replace the entire headlight, casing and all, which would come up to hundreds of dollars. i was in school then and that kind of cash was big money to me. decided to take it to my uncle's garage (didnt go there first because it was a bit of a drive from my place, the Shell garage was alot closer), turns out that the only thing that had to be replaced was the friggin bulb inside, which my uncle gladly did for FREE.
developing a good business relationship with a trustworthy, competent mechanic is priceless- same with an attorney, doctor, hair stylist, etc.
sure, you can get it done cheaper somewhere else, but is it really worth it?

taking your vehicle to the dealership isn't always the best idea.
in many cases they will sub-contract it out to another garage.
find a shop that you can trust, and stick with them.
A lot og garages are having fights with OEMs due to them making their cars (especially the diagnostic side) dealeship specific. Like not selling garages the right readers to workon the car. Dealerships make their largest amount of money off maintenance. Taking it to a garage is a massive hit in their finances
i hardly ever use my AC. in fact I barely use it at all I just drive with the windows open, only time it's on is during winter for heat. I've taken it in before for some big time tuneups and I think I recall that exact filter getting replaced.
oh well.
i agree with you guys, someone's said that to me before (I think someone who worked in the biz) that they make killings and most of their money in maintenance and swindling repairs
no I just brought it into my local dealership bells, hence the thread title... lol. I was nearby when the indicator took a shit on me so I figured better get it in.
I do have a local shop that my family's been going to for years but I'm not sure how trustworthy and competent they are. I think they give us deals on prices and parts but their tech side is pretty shit. We've had to take a car back there three times for the same issue, pretty sure that means their junk.
it's hard to find a good mechanic these days !
Why didn't you change your own oil? It's one fucking plug ffs!
lol yeah, just unscrew the sump plug and flush it through
i hated being skanked all the time at the garages so i bought a few books...
it also helps if you know someone whos into motors, often they can source you cheap parts and sometimes labour.
You're supposed to change filters on a regular basis...
Did you ask to see the filters to see how dirty they were??
Lol @ sissy girls that can't change their own oil. Get back to the dishes.
Many dealership mechanics also work on commission. Maintenance is a cash cow for sure, but the financing dept is where the real money is made.
It was probably the Oil filter he was talking about, i always change it when i change the oil in the engine.
I know alot of mechanics and they see this all the time. The thing that has caused alot of concern in modern cars with cramped engine bays is the cost to change a lightbulb. Trust me, on some cars its a nightmare. And therefor it cost alot just to change a friggin bulb.
I bet OP takes his car into the shop every time he needs his windscreen fluid refilled.
