What do you mean "shutting down"?

Had till August 2 for what?

Someone fucking tell me

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Jul-23-2011 03:52:

No, most agencies run out of money starting tomorrow. The biggest I think is the FAA (though air traffic controllers still will be on the job).

August 2nd is the dead line for our bills to other countries. If we miss a payment we will essentially be downgraded to the status of sub-saharan african countries.

Posted by gmilf on Jul-23-2011 03:53:

yes! it will be so easy to pay off these student loans once I work outside of America.

August 2nd is the deadline for the US to raise the debt ceiling otherwise the country will default on its foreign obligations and credit rating agencies will downgrade us. Although I think they can do that before August 2nd though. Interesting times indeed.

yeah. it's the republicans fault again. classic Obama: do nothing, offer no plan while sitting back criticizing everyone else's, and wait till the last second and swoop in pretending to be above the fray scolding both sides for "playing politics", and claim armageddon will happen if we don't all do exactly what he wants. where was he 3 months ago on this? 6 months ago? 1 year ago?

Wait, so he's both offering no plan and telling us to do something? I am le confused here.

Also, I thought this was Congress' resonsibility, not the President's. Doesn't him sitting back and doing nothing actually fit his responsibilities as per the (non-living) Constitution?

Very, very confused.

Also, also, I thought he had offered multiple plans.

it's not going to shut down for chrissake. the treasury still takes in $200 billion/month, plenty of money to service our debt and pay all the fucking entitlements.

Oh good, so all the stories I've read about thousands of workers being furloughed was all nonsense

Congress DID pass two plans already: the Ryan plan, and Cut Cap & Balance. The Senate shot both of them down. The Senate was supposed to pass its own budget 813 days ago... BY LAW, and have not. The only time they tried was back in February, and it got voted down 97-0... every single Democrat even thought what Obama proposed was too radical.

Yeah, but I'd still prefer the country to reach a solution (even if financially I might actually be better off otherwise )

I know. The point is, Congress is doing it's job... the Republicans are the only ones who have actually put forth serious detailed plans to be voted on. The Democrats have produced nothing. ZERO. Like I said, the Democrats in the Senate are 813 days behind passing a budget. That's.... what, Bush's fault?

Political showmanship. Everyone knew those plans would never get through. Ryan's plan was completely off the reservation (although, admittedly, props to him for having a detailed plan, even if it fucking sucked).

And the republican's are refusing to negotiate. Congress needs to make compromises. Refusing to add in any tax cuts whatsoever is fucking stupid.

Not really sure how you seriously can just blame the Democrats for this catastrophe.
