Anything But An Atheist

A short interesting documentary on the social effects of atheism and the repercussions that can come about due to the admission of being atheist in the United States.

"the most hated and mistrusted minority in the united states"

uh, no. that would probably be transgender people.

Quite hyperbolic in the manner used to paint atheists as a persecuted minority and it's not that I don't think they're unjustly singled out but it seemed to take a fairly glaring conceit, stating that atheists are the least violent, most tolerant, most intelligent, most progressive people ever to be maligned. The inclusion of Ayn Rand is also ironic, especially as it pertains to that blurb at the end.

I don't agree with putting people down for their beliefs but this video is flawed on several levels of intellectual integrity. If Christians or any religious group made it to suit their purposes, I would be just as vehement about trashing it. No matter where it came from or what it's trying to portray, it only adds more bullshit than substance.

Oh, and go fuck yourself, Mr. Bison.

Are atheists even the most mistrusted religious minority? I thought that would be Muslims.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but...

7.6 + 12.5 + 13.5 + 20 + 22.6 + 26.3 + ~40 = 142.5

The last comment of the most progressive etc is untrue or in the least, not relevant. Atheism is nothing more than not believing in a godly being. It says nothing about the values a person holds dear.

That being said though, as a foreigner looking at the US, it's almost incomprehensible how religion is tied into its political and social environment, this is in no way a secular state. In public debates the arguments used to defends one's view on issues like abortion, gay rights... are almost always religiously based. As an atheist, this kind of society would aggravate me enormously.

case in point. bye bye.

you don't 'become' transgender anymore than you 'become bald' or 'become a twat'.

While it is possible to be a very progressive christian, in general as you get more progressive the chance for conversion to atheism gets higher.

I understand how you could feel this way, but I think you're allowing your own personal experiences to cloud your judgment on this one. Transgendered people are certainly hated, perhaps by more people than hate atheists, but not nearly to the same degree. I wouldn't say that transgendered people are necessarily "mistrusted" either. Your group has made great strides recently, I think. (Don't kill me for saying this as an outsider, if I'm wrong.)

There have been movies made with transgendered characters, some even in lead roles in movies that focus on their plight. A movie about an atheist, somewhat loud in his beliefs, making amends with society simply wouldn't fly. When people lash out at transgendered society they call it "a disease" or a "sick perversion", things of that nature. Atheists, on the other hand, are far more likely to be totally rebuked as hell-spawn / antichrists. They don't face oppression on a daily basis in the same way that you do on a personal level, but there's a very present anti-atheist undercurrent in our country.

Yeah, I don't watch videos with sad music.

And wow at how female Avana has become. She even has the attention whoring part down, where you make every discussion about yourself.

Haha, if only faggots spent as much time fighting for their rights as they do fighting to be realised as the most marginalised.

You're extremely, extremely wrong.

If you want to know why, you can PM me since all the other ladies in this thread are getting their panties in a bunch because I said the word 'transgender' again.

I just thought that since transgender people are one of the most misunderstood and maligned minorities it might have appeared on this video's graphs, along with the other minorities. The truth is that we are marginalized even by the marginalized. For example, the NAACP has excluded transgender people from the upcoming "LGBT" town hall at its (yes they still curiously use the 'T') convention in LA.

I was mostly disputing the stupid claim in the video that atheists are the most hated minority. I disputed this claim with a counterexample I know to be true because of personal experience and the fact that I am in touch with and active in the trans community. I'm sure there are other highly hated minorities that could be used as counterexamples, but my trans example is the only one I can corroborate.

In any case, this isn't about me 'feeling' any way. In fact, I am one of the extremely lucky transgender people who isn't hated or mistrusted by most of the people in my life. So when I say this I say it on behalf of my less fortunate brothers and sisters. Again, if you want the facts, ask me for them privately, because I'm just going to get flamed here just for saying the 'T' word.

Actually, it's just you who is now attributing my personality and writing style to the things you hate about women. I've always had a tendency to speak anecdotally, much to SYSTEM-J's chagrin.

Spot on with the twisted, nonsensical argumentation as well.

Derailing a thread about atheism towards your own issues has nothing to do with personality, writing style or speaking anecdotally. It's a medical condition named Barbina syndrome.

You're right, you should never use things you actually know about as counterexamples in debating a claim made in the OP.

That's really not a good attitude to take

I agree, no use just complaining, but what related issue should they be also fighting for? Same sex marriage? I'm sure lots of people are.

This video also hints at fighting for "under god" to be removed from the pledge of allegience (so for instance you aren't forced to say it in court, otherwise you can't be a witness), and fighting against the prejudice of not being allowed to rent if you're an atheist.

So I think if you actually watched the thing you'd realise you were wrong in that respect.
