TOP 10 DJs on the DJ MAG Poll

Obviously we would all like a different top 10 DJs list but it is a popularity contest. Here's what I'd like to see happen to the top 10 because I doubt it will change very much:

1. Armin van Buuren has been up here for 4 years in a row. He has a great positive personality that wins him a lot of support. Despite the haters, he works very hard and has done incredible things for trance worldwide including the awesome ASOT 500 five continent celebration. Mirage wasn't the sound I was hoping for but what can you expect when he has very little time and Benno De Goeij from Rank1 does all the heavy lifting for his music? I wish he would hire somebody young and talented to work with in the studio. Or even better, BT. He may move down but who knows.

2. David Guetta is a total sell out piece of shit who went top 40. He could very well be #1 DJ of 2011. There was a time years ago where I pondered maybe it's good that he's making house music mainstream. However there's no doubt he's a detriment good music when he brought Flavor Flav on stage during EDC Vegas to yell over the beats really loudly his name over and over. I don't like him but I have to say he does bring in a lot more people into EDM.

3. Tiesto is a hilarious joke. Sure he has 9 million fans on facebook with an incredible marketing team, but all he did was scrap his dropping trance career a few years ago and embrace really awful cheesy electro. It's like trance got less cheesy and electro house became ultra cheesey. Also, "Tiesto's Club Life" has to be the dumbest name I have ever heard for a radio show/compilation series. How did he go from In Search of Sunrise to that? Whenever I see a Tiesto t-shirt all I can think is "fucking noob." I hope he falls or retires.

4. Deadmau5 really dropped the ball last year with 4x4=12. Terrible album and someone needs to shoot dead that screachy voice bitch Sofi. However he does show some promise going back to his roots with HR 8978 Cephei (was beautiful hearing this closer at the end of his UMF set this year). I'm seeing him in L.A. at the Palladium soon and I hope to hear if his upcoming stuff will be more like the infamous Random Album Title. I'm cool with him at his position.

5. Above & Beyond truly stepped it up this year. I will be shocked if they don't move up since Sun And Moon has to be the biggest trance hit of the year. The TATW 350 wcelebration in L.A. was awesome and their Group Therapy tour show in Hollywood was even better www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUYaYAsqLqw (HD)

6. Paul van Dyk hasn't made a tune in years and his recent show in LA was abysmal. Much like Tiesto, this old dog has no idea what he's doing. Pathetic and I wish him to drop off the map as he should.

7. Gareth Emery is earning a very strong fan base and puts on good show including his Miami set for ASOT 500. However, I'm not a huge fan so whatever happens to him happens.

8. Markus Schulz aka The Unicorn Slayer is the number DJ in my book. This man performs and tours like a maniac. He's very interactive with his fans and his dark techy sets kick ass every time. Just checkout his incredible Avalon set in Hollywood: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e1hqaJVAgA (HD)

9. Ferry Corsten is boring me to death with his "Best of Ferry" sets. His ASOT 500 show was just bad and boring. I do like his new tune Feel It a lot and he should continue with that trouse. I got a feeling he's going to fall.

10. Axwell has done very well as a producer while still putting on great shows. He's a nice dude to meet in person but I just hate that Save The World tune with a passion. He will likely move up along with the Swedish House Mafia.

Sadly, your list is probably how it'll look.

I don't like a single one of those DJs...the only one I even remotely respect is Emery

I don't understand, you say this is what you want to see happen, yet you bash on the #2 and #3 ranked DJs? And these are last years results.

I think it's what p_t wants to happen to last year's Top 10. OP's actual Top 10 would probably be something like this:

I really wonder where skrillex will end up. If he finds himself in the top 10 the poll would lose A LOT more credibility, imo.

Actually stupid it would show how accurately it represents the popularity of artists. Skrillex has gotten huge in a very little amount of time. Representing this on the poll would show that the pool is with the times and give it more credibility.

This time the voting will be held thorugh facebook with an app so it'll be much more difficult to cheat. Last year you could just use different e-mail addresses to vote multiple times.

Shrillex got popular because he was widely promoted in an industry sector that, at the mainstream level, is as close to being run by a monopoly as it ever has been. He and others like him are an aberration as acceptable levels of mediocrity, promoted for the sake of monetary expediency opposed to having legitimate talent that would qualify them for positions were your touted poll more reflective of ability than an arguably artificially inflated popularity.

I've seen this shit infesting this forum for two years in a row and even though I can't decide if you and people like you are trolls pushing the buttons on a small, on-line community or unwitting shills who really believe the same warmed-over bullshit cookies, year after year. Regardless, there is one thing you need to understand about this community with regard to DJ Mag's Top 100:

We know it's fucking bullshit.

We don't believe in it. We're not going to stop pointing it out. If you're actually interested in running an effective public relations campaign, I can think of no worse place for you to continue to post at effort to advance your agenda, both cloaked in and composed entirely of utter bullshit.

I hope you're kidding with this. The poll is for the best DJ of the year. You think Skrillex deserves to be in the top 10 based on the success of one release of his? I haven't heard dick about any of his gigs, haven't heard a thing about his mad skilllz. Deadmau5 blowing up huge was one thing - he actually had some great productions that he came in off of. Skrillex is part of a hype machine, as EZ so aptly related. He's not a dj. He's probably not even a real person.

Skrillex is a passing fad (most likely). Even if people don't agree with the poll, having djs like Armin, Tiesto, Markus, etc up at the top is very reasonable. They're all still releasing tracks frequently and gigging nonstop for loyal fans.

Fuck off with your Skrillex.

No but on topic, I tend to agree with the original post. For the most part. I do have some objections and I definitely would have to move Deadmau5 up at least into the top3. And Skrillex, no way he should even be considered in the top10. Anyways, my top 10 would be..


#1 Sander Van Doorn - Great dj, fantastic person. There's not a show I've seen where he's not behind the decks smiling, enjoying himself, and dropping bombs for the crowd to dance to. He's released quite a few tracks this year that have been chart toppers and he deserves this spot.

#2 Armin Van Buuren - Popularity wins out on this spot, and I wouldn't put him here by choice but I think the masses speak for themselves. I really can't stand his arrogance nor the countless "Jesus" poses that are encountered throughout his sets but from a production standpoint his tracklists grow daily and they all seem to be favorited by his following and they're pretty decent.

#3 Deadmau5 - He was on tour most of this year, as were others, but with his music coming mostly from analog synthesizers that remain behind while he's on the road, there's not much he can do other than just rock the clubs and enjoy the sites when he's away. However, this year he's proven to a remarkable DJ and worthy of being in the top 3.

#4 Above & Beyond - No suprise here. Although it would've been had Group Therapy not taken off as it did. Not even mentioning "Thing Called Love" or "Sun & Moon" Above & Beyond carried this year with a couple of the most inspirational tracks of 2011. They definitely deserve a top5 spot.

#5 Avicii - If you name a handful of dj's that have risen as quickly as this guy the name that comes to mind is Deadmau5. Though remarkably different, Avicii's sounds are a crowd favorite, he's well in demand, and from a production standpoint his music is top-notch. Definitely, at least for this year, a top5 dj.

#6 Ferry Corsten - With his only release being "Feel It" which in my sets doesn't get much playing time. It's been somewhat quiet on the Corsten front. Corsten definitely, on an ongoing basis gets a top3 spot but this year, there were other dj's that really outshined Ferry- even though he's my favorite dj- from a top100 spot this is where he landed.

#7 Tiesto - Not much coming out from the Tiesto camp these days besides oversaturation of his brand and mid-level compiliations. His Club Life series, although decent listening was only played once in my place and that's hugely different from albums past. There were no real standouts as he's had in past albums and no real nights to remember this year either. But, because the masses seem to hang on anything Tiesto here he is.

#8 Alesso - More noticed as producer, and not as a touring DJ, Alesso get's mad props for this years releases. Not only was his flavour distinctly different from like producers, he's remixes were by far the best released this year. However, due to a lack of following and no real compiliations to speak of, he gets a top10 nod.

#9 Kaskade - With most of the spots reserved for hugely popular trance dj's and hot dj's e.g. Deadmau5 and Avicii, Kaskade is not to be overlooked. His house sets remain some of the best in the business and because of his awesome personality and his genuine love for what he does, he's in my top10.

#10 Chuckie - Although he should be ranked much higher based on skill alone. The energy of his sets, the thoughtfulness that's apparent in each of his compiliations plus, with his remixes and originals, Chuckie rounds out the top10 as a truly global DJ.

All should be mixed somewhere near the top20 in this years vote. If.. it was based on activity, energy, and dance music. Imo.

Oh I didn't like their set when they were here a few weeks ago.. In fact, I would agree with you.. I was bored to death.. But Deadmau5' live shows.. what?? Just awesomeness!! and.. I can't wait for his next show. He's going Live bringing his synths on stage and 4x as many lights as last years tour. I'm friggin excited!!

I love Above & Beyond's "boring" sets.

Group Therapy, however, is terrible and I won't be voting for them since they phoned in that album.

Avicii will likely be in the top 10, too. Along with SHM.

My favorite sets of the year so far, BY far, were from Digweed, Solarstone, and Thrillseekers. They'll be getting votes from me.
