FAO: Anyone who has visited/lives in NYC
I'm planning a second-to-last-minute trip to New York next month, and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for cheap and not-too-shitty accomodation that is still bookable. An American equivalent to the Premier Inn (http://www.premierinn.com/en/) would do nicely.
Thanks in advance.
Everywhere in nyc is expensive. Fortunately, the exchange rate is definitely in your favor. Where are you going or what are you doing? Need something/where more specific.
You'd probably be better off staying outside of NYC in Northern New Jersey. It'd be a lot cheaper and still very easy and quick to get into the actual city.
Just going for three or four days in the middle of the week, probably the second week of September. Two people. I'd like somewhere in Manhattan, close to all the stuff we'd like to see and do.
I'm just asking in the vague hope someone might have some inside knowledge.
Yeah, you can stay outside Manhattan, but it's a lot of fun just being there and being able to wake up and crash without the extra hour and hassle.
Almost every non-sketchy place in Manhattan is going to have tiny (around 200sqf) rooms starting at around $300/night.
Stay away from Times Square. You'll pay more to be near the most boring place in NY.
Huh... well we've already found a hotel near Central Park that offers three nights for 110 per-person.

Which direction?
You want to be south of it. That's kind of the dividing line for touristy stuff (among other differences)
Upper West Side.
What about looking into apartment rentals? I know they do that shit in tons of places in Europe...wondering if NYC offers the same kind of arrangement.

if u have an iphone download the hotel tonight app, they have resonable daily deals. u should be able to book a nice room for about 100-150/night in midtown or downtown. fuck upper west side.
plus that app gives u $50 off ur first booking

Try www.couchsurfing.com, Jack. Should be more interesting and even less expensive.

i agree with the above. just got back from nyc myself today. i got a hotel (sheraton) in brooklyn for $119 that is real nice. next to the stop, and a 10-15 minute train ride to anywhere in manhattan.
if not, yes renting an apartment for a stretch of days is good too. some are cheaper than a hotel, and better accommodations.
only problem is that the hotel is in a shady neighborhood, but that can be ignored.
