Smiley DJ FLTA DJ Contest?

i posted this in another thread and it got a couple positive replies so lets see if we can get a couple more here and maybe get this ball rolling...

so how about to liven this place up we have a little dj contest. a lot of you guys work hard behind the decks so how about we showcase that a bit more than just throwing all the mixes into the downloading thread where it just sits until it gets lost. and for those of us that dont dj well atleast we'll have some new music to listen to.

we upload the mixes somewhere, we download and listen to them, we create a poll and let everybody vote. maybe as a prize the winning mix could get stickied for a month?

thoughts?

i would think maybe we should set some sort of criteria that way the mixes can be judged fairly.

in my opinion it would be too weird to judge if we have trance mixes and tech house mixes and electro mixes with no criteria set at all because fuck you're only gonna pick what genre you like. limiting the contest to one genre though is also not a good idea because well we dont all mix the same genre.

maybe we could set up a theme? maybe since its summer, each mix must have a summer feel? its simple but i think it could work. and if you listen to a mix and dont feel that it doesnt have a summer feel then maybe theres a penalty.

i would say the mixes can be made any which way. if you wanna mix is live in one go, go for it. if you wanna use software, do it.

limiting the length i think is a must. either 45-60 mins or 60-80 i would say. or what do you guys think?

theres gotta be some scoring system too. simply voting for your favorite is too simple i think. maybe rate each mix on a scale of 1-10. then divide that by the the total number of ratings that mix got to get an average. or maybe the voters could list their top 3 favorite mixes. #1 getting 5 points, #2 getting 3 points, and #3 getting 1 point. then whatever mix has the highest point total wins.

once the criteria is set we can give the djs 2 weeks to make and upload a mix. then maybe 2 weeks to judge. then we'll have a winner. if this actually goes well maybe there could be a contest a month and then the winner will have their mix stickied for a whole month.

well thats what i think but what about you guys?

Yeah... I think this is a great idea.
Why don't we try to get some promoters involved and see if we can get the winning mix a opening slot for a major headliner or a brodcast with one of the major webcast. I know that Matt Darey and Daren Epsilon post on here from time to time.
Just an idea.

Posted by PatMcGroin on Aug-09-2011 22:19:

that might be possible but at first lets just see if people actually submit mixes. we'll take it from there afterwards.

so i guess i'll make a new thread for the start of the contest soon. everyone out with a summer mix regardless of genre. and should it be 45-60 mins or 60-80? i would say 45-60 that way the listeners have a chance to listen to all the mixes maybe?

Posted by bottledz on Aug-10-2011 01:29:

As far as length... I say anywhere from 40-80 Minutes. A great mix is a great mix no matter the length.
(Obviously 3-4 tracks is not going to be that exciting)
A good artist knows when a mix is complete. The less rules and restriction that are put on the competition the more room you leave for artist interpretations and creativity. What we really need to do is focus on, strict and fair guidelines for voting. We don't need a popularity contest.
e.g. someone casting votes for themselves over and over or having friends voting over and over. (Thats pointless)

Remember this contest should be about showing and proving to yourself as much as it is the people who listen and vote.

Even Shit DJ's and Producers have groupies. If you can't stand on your own don't bother posting a mix you'll know it sux and so will we.
