not very happy

I'm not one to have a moan, or rant about things. but something on this forum has really started to annoy me. This being the way that some Message Board members use the term 'gay' as an insult. I don't know what it's like in America or Canada, but here in the UK it's not done - it's almost Homophobia. Infact it is Homophobia, you are using the term Gay to describe a Bad, or a Lame thing, ie. 'he's so gay for liking gangtsa rap..' whatever.

I find it offensive, and uncalled for, and maybe you should all think about what you are saying before you hit submit.

And before you all ask, Yes, I am Gay. (seems like i'm the only one?)

Rant over, you can all go back to your business.

Re: not very happy

Totally agree with JMF, though I think it's common for people to say it all over America (I'm including Brazil)

We're all the same thing (with different tastes and opinions, but we're people after all). It's not right to think that straight people are superior than gay.

Instead of saying "he's so gay because he likes Britney Spears", try to find some other term (lame, for example).

I'm straight, by the way.

Posted by Jayci on Aug-20-2002 03:45:

Yeah, here in Canada its quite a common term too. like...that's gay, or he's a fag or whatever. We don't really mean that they're actually gay, its just an insult term like moron. But in a message board like this where we have people from all different cultures, I agree that we should be aware of what we say. I've used the term in front of people who are sensitive to it and they've told me that, and now I'm much more aware of it and I try to use other terms.

personally, if someone says something i don't like i just ignore it. what else are you going to do? you're not going to stop me or most people just because it "offends" you. i'm sorry yes, but i'm not going to change

well if you dont get the asshole of the year award, i dont know who is.

how about if you were chinese and i always talked about chinks? or if you were african american and i always felt the need to talk about ******s?

dont even say you wouldnt care because thats bullshit.

so please, continue your neanderthal behavior. shrug.

edited to add:
it appears the forum is smart and ***'s out the N word.. my point is certainly clear tho.

Posted by USMC_Greg on Aug-20-2002 04:39:

So straight people are suddenly not good enough to be called gay?

I really don't care how you live your life, 'cuz what you do on your own time is non of my business. I just don't feel I have to bend over backwards (no pun intended here) to cater to gays, or anyone for that matter.

----------->not gaybashing, just sharing my point of view<------------

Posted by Renegade on Aug-20-2002 04:39:

Yeah, it's not the sort of thing you wanna get used to saying guys, cos it'll come back at you some day and bite you on the arse.

And yes, I learned the hard way. I made one of those "isn't such-and-such gay" type comments, to someone who ended up being homo-sexual himself. Understandably pissed him off no end. So, long story short, no, I don't call things gay anymore.

so you feel perfectly comfortable calling a chinese person a chink? or an african american the n word i cant say because itll ** it out? or any other racial slur?

if not, why will you cater to them and yet not to someones sexuality?

bottom line, this is something guys pick up in grade school, and it sticks until they grow up and learn its a stupid insult anyways. i find that most of my friends (~21+) have dropped the use of the word... hopefully you guys will grow up and stop eventually too.

Posted by Mikrop on Aug-20-2002 05:07:

I choose this point in time to remind ALL of u that the original meaning of thw word GAY is HAPPY (/GASP!!!). Therefore a person who is homosexual, should not be offended to begin with. Not that i use the word in a derogatory way... I'm jus sayin' y'know...

Posted by PatMcGroin on Aug-20-2002 05:36:

sothis

i say ******, chink, cracker, all those deragatory terms all the time...of course not in the demeaning way. i call my friends and say "yo nig what up?" to blacks and whites. i call a fat chinese friend of mine "chunk"....he actually came up with the idea. i'm VERY liberal, and if i even quesiton that somoene may be offended by something i won't say it

and lemme say this, who the fuck are you to question the way i live my life? i'm not causing anyone any harm, and seriously if you get offended by someone saying "gay" and its not even directed towards you, then you should not be on the internet

i feel comfortable saying "that tune is gay"...and i'll continue to say it. like i said, i'm not changing. i am my own person, and if you don't like it, you can fuck right off. i'm not making you like me, but i'm not going to do something espically just to please you.

and i don't get offended at pety little words sweetie. i get called cracker or skiny bitch, do i care? nope! because whoever says it doens't mean it in a bad way, and if i call a tune gay, i'm not insulting anyone else who replied in the thread, just that i don't like the song! the only thing that somewhat offends me is when someone calls me a nazi. because i am a german living in the united states, and there are some IGNORANT mother******s here. but you know what, i just tell them no, and forget about it. so this is my quesiton, why can't other people do the same??? i find it within myself to do it, so STOP BITCHING ABOUT SOMETHING THATS NOT GOING TO CHANGE ANYWAY! unless all curse words are going to be ***ed out.

*growl*

who are you to critize how people talk? do i say you shouldn't live your life a certain way because it offends me? no, you do your own thing as long as i don't get hurt by it.

wow, talk about a complete and total contradiction. way to go.

when did i say i was offended?

who am i? i dont know, just a person who tries to not insult people indirectly by calling them names off hand.

my issue with things like this is the fact that people cant accept the fact that words CAN offend people, and cant grow up to the point where they can respectfully phase certain words out of their vocabulary.

*puts on his boxing gloves and steps in the ring*

sothis - defender of all that is good and just... you friggin femi-nazi... haha j/k (although, I must say, you have to be the most opinionated person on these forums... thats why I like ya tho )

NEways... people just need to be above it all and not let ignorant comments get to them so easily. It is ridiculous to get all worked up and bent out of shape just because someone calls you a name, especially if it is a stranger or someone you barely know. I was at work the other day and someone called me a white-ass cracker mother ******. What did that accomplish on his part nothing, because I didn't let it get to me. I do agree that people use the term "gay" pretty excessivly though, but I don't think we should all get on there case about it, just don't look past it or point out a word that would better fits the situation.

And here what is what I think about dumb arguments like this...

OK I am done, it is late and I have a feeling that my lack of sleep has just caused me to spew a bunch of non-coherent thoughts. Good night all.

Posted by PatMcGroin on Aug-20-2002 06:52:

right, so apparently i have to explain myself again

i wouldn't walk up to someone and be like "yo n get me this"...thats disrespectful, and it crosses the line, because its DIRECTED at one individual.....BUT if i say "that tune is gay", that isn't directed at anyone? so why should ANYONE take offense to it?

see my point now?

and i didn't mean YOU, i meant "you" as a generalization...if you want i'll rephrase....
i'm not causing anyone any harm, and seriously if SOMEONE get offended by someone saying "gay" and its not even directed towards THEM, then THEY should not be on the internet

happy now?

i'm not calling anyone gay, i'm just saying the track is gay...gay is an adjective....and it being 2002 and all, i'd figure most people would lighten the hell up. we've all been exposed to it, and why can't SOMEONE just simply ignore it? or is that too hard of a concept to grasp? i mean, i've mastered it, whats to stop someone else?

veldrid, i take great pride with arguing people. i always walk away feeling good about myself

Posted by Miss Proximus on Aug-20-2002 06:55:

I've said this before JMF, but I don't think anyone will listen.

I agree that this board is filled with homophobes and I think it's pathetic.

I have nothing more to say other than "I'm sorry TAs are this narrow minded (ofcourse there are exceptions)":S

No speach this time Just sadness....

Posted by Veldrid on Aug-20-2002 06:59:

Don't get me wrong, I love to argue and debate, but there are some topics that just aren't worth it. I honestly don't think this is worth it because I doubt anyone here is really gonna change their opinions.

Posted by PhaseFour on Aug-20-2002 07:00:

hey

i think its only an america thing. i personally dont say omg eminem is gay or something, but lots of my friends do, and to me thats just messed up...that point has already been made, thats not why i posted

@sothis: i happen to be chinese, and usually i dont get fussy about racial slurs, but why would u censor out the african slur and leave the chinese/asian slur there? wouldnt someone as intelligent as you are think that we have feelings too? the point of this post is not to flame you, but to tell everyone that racial slurs are bad all around. remember, i usually dont get bitchy about asian pride and stuff, but that was serious enough to catch my eye

2 Mikey Mike: you are BY FAR the lamest tranceaddict member I've EVER seen on the boards. (remember..MY opinion... )
I feel you're always insulting people and when people say something about about Gielen for example..you freak out.
Insecure huh?
That's OK, but there are better ways to hide it, other than hurting other peoples feelings all the time
