-- Audio Interface, what to choose?

Audio Interface, what to choose?

Right,

So, I've ditched the CDJs, and fancy having a crack with Ableton.

I still have my Xone92 and by KRK RP8s, as well as a killer laptop which is more than capable of handling any current piece of software. I've also got a copy of Ableton Live 8.

I was going to grab a Traktor X1 as a controller, but am open to guidance on this. I happen to have just picked up an iPad2 as well, and understand you can use this as a bolt on to Ableton - anyone have any experience with this?

I currently only need 2 channels from laptop to mixer, so an audio interface is the only other thing I need, what makes an audio interface good or bad? It just sits there and passes through the sound, right. So somethin matched to the quality of my Xone and my RP8s is what I need. Has anyone got any suggestions on this whole thing?

Cheers

Jarv

If you already have an iPad, get touchOSC or Touchable. really awesome apps. Cant recommend a controller cos with ableton, everyone kinda works out their own way to use it so I would recommend routing ableton through an soundcard to your xone92. I use the native instruments audio 4, good sound and great latency.

Motu or bust! the AD/DA's on the NI stuff is terrible!

Sad but true.

Should have at least gone for an ECHO. Motu are fine and reliable but honestly, they're a little overpriced for the sonic quality they output.

Mbox Mini IMO is a great budget-minded interface.

Love the way I post and only one person replies in more than 24 hours.

The minute I commit to buying the whole world chimes in and gives their negative opinions!

Not the end of the world, it hasn't even arrived yet, I'll just send it straight back.

I looked at that, however, it seems that the unit only has ONE output.

How would I use two channels in Ableton to output to two channels on my mixer - have I missed something?

Look at the blow up rear picture in this review: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb...s/mbox2mini.htm

What about the NI Audio2? Small compact solution with two outputs.

lol

I suggested it as I thought it was one of the cheaper soundcards out there and seems like you just want something to tie you over in the mean time that has 2 channels.

I don't know a whole lot about soundcards though and the lads above seem to have a better Idea so i was purely suggesting one i knew which was nice and compact and has 2 channel outputs.

Good luck with whichever one you go for

Actually the card arrived today, I thought sod it and opened it and to be perfectly honest, without comparing it to anything else, it sounds perfectly fine. And I am very fussy about sound quality......!

After what people were saying I was expecting it to sound like a bag of spanners.

I have a separate issue now which I will post about separately, all to do with Ableton.

Jarv, It's not that it's terrible, it's just that there's better out there for only a tiny bit more money.

For instance the ECHO audiofire4 - it uses the same converters as motu interfaces that cost 5 times more and sounds incredible, given that it costs less than $250. It also has two very usable mic pre's and a headphone out on the front, not to mention that it's 4 in 4 out with midi built in.

Then again, the NI audio 2 is only $99.

It's less than half the price in the UK of any of the other suggestions.

I'm just wanting to trial this Ableton thing and see where it goes. For 85 quid I can pretty much throw it in the bin if I can't sell it when I've finished with it!

I was thinking of sending it back, but when I read all the reviews no one mentioned it had any sound quality issues. Now I know for such a small price this thing is entry level, but I have to say it definitely does the job so far as I can tell.

Glad you're happy with it. That's what counts in the end of the day.

I don't have the means. I've just got it channeled through my Xone92 and into a couple of KRK RP8s (which you enthusiastically recommended I leave well alone too back in 2006!) and it sounds fine!

Ugh. Go for a hearing check. you're not doing your Xone92 any justice with the rest of your signal chain.

Then again, it's maybe better that that you didn't spend the extra on the Echo Audiofire given that you're listing through KRK's
