Major Lazer
saw these guys at the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park last Sunday. in four years of attending this festival, Major Lazer's performance was the most hilariously bad thing that's ever happened to me, and I once had to walk home twenty blocks through the Castro with an Argentine dude on acid who was trying to seduce me. as DJs, if you want to call them that, there is simply no coherence to their performance. as producers, their music is somewhere in between reggaeton and the Swedish House Mafia. I've seen DJs play a lot like this in Brazil, with all the samples of airhorns and lasers and shit, but the fact that it's coming from two tepid white guys like Diplo and Switch is mind-boggling and a little bit insulting on some level. To make matters more confusing, here is the bio that the website gives about the band:
Major Lazer is a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984. The US military rescued him and repurposed experimental lazers as prosthetic limbs. Since then Major Lazer has been a hired renegade soldier for a rogue government operating in secrecy underneath the watch of M5 and the CIA. His cover is that of a dancehall night club owner from Trinidad and he enlisted the help of long-time allies and uber-producers, Diplo and Switch, to produce his first LP. His true mission is to protect the world from the dark forces of evil that live just under the surface of a civilized society. He fights vampires and various monsters, parties hard, and has a rocket powered skateboard.
Diplo and Switch have probably the worst stage presence I've seen of most amateur DJs, let alone ones that are allowed to play stages this size. this explains why they would enlist the help of hypeman Skerrit Bwoy, whose job is to pace back and forth and tell people when to put their hands in their air. there was also some other girl running around without a microphone. I'm really not sure why people would actually subject themselves to Major Lazer when there were 4 other stages worth of acts, nor am I sure why Thom Yorke remixed one of their songs. just watch these videos and see if it doesn't make your brain vessels throb in confusion. just thinking about this makes my head hurt... I need to lie down.

Well, they're fucking shit on record. I got extremely sick of hearing Pon De Floor in just about every DJ's set a year or two back. I even heard Jon Carter drop that track in an acid house classics set. What the fuck is that? No surprise they're just as annoying live.
