Limelight -Movie Documentry coming 9/23/11

I do think release date is 9/23/11. Some links on youtube for trailer. Looks real good.

Another Tribeca Film Festival title has sold, with Magnolia Pictures snapping up worldwide rights to "Limelight," the story of the controversial nightspot of the same name and Rudolph Giuliani-era New York.

Billy Corben, who previously helmed Magnolia's drug-wars doc, "Cocaine Cowboys," directed "Limelight." The talking-head picture tells of Peter Gatien, the eyepatch-wearing nightclub impresario, and his emergence as the owner of legendary clubs Limelight and Tunnel just as Ecstasy and the rave culture were coming into vogue, as well as his subsequent battles with law enforcement.

Gatien eventually pleaded guilty to tax evasion and was deported to his native Canada. Gatien's daughter Jen is a producer on the film.

The movie will open theatrically in August, Magnolia said in a statement. The company made the announcement ahead of the film's Tribeca premiere on Friday night.

The acquisition marks the second festival documentary acquired by Magnolia -- the company previously picked up the culinary doc "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," about a legendary Japanese sushi chef.

Def the years of club movies lately. So many have come out in the past few years: The Villalobos movie, Berlin Calling, High Tech Soul to name a few. The europeans have been on this for a while, the US is just finally catching up. Wouldn't be surprised if something about WMC or DEMF comes out soon. I think Derrick May did a little documentary about DEMF a while ago. And djs now are doing their own thing as well, Luciano's "Ruta Del Sol" is an example, it came with his artist album "Tribute to the Sun" a couple of years ago. Crosstown Rebels doing Rebel Rave TV too. The movie about Studio 54 kinda sucked though, something better needs to be done if there isn't something already, I'm sure there is...

A friend of mine texted me the other day from a documentary opening party @ Tribeca. The doc was called "My House Rocs". Lots of Garage heads in attendance.

Party Monster. I don't know, it was ok. Haven't seen it in a few years though, maybe if I saw it again, I'd prob change my opinion. It wasn't nearly as bad as 54 though, haha.

The first place I heard loud electronic music in my life. that winter night 4 of us ages between 14 and 16, without jackets, stood in front of red robe for 3 hours til the door people felt for us and finally let us in. the rest is history. and yes, i spent way too much time there weekly ever since, from tuesdays thru sundays, i'd be there 3-4 times a week, usually every week, drawn by club and the all colors of the world scene in there. DICSO2K survivor; LOL, I even own a Limelight "Security" tshirt.

In theaters: September 23rd, 2011

Limelight Directed by Billy Corben (USA) World Premiere, Documentary As the owner of legendary hotspots like Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium, and Club USA, Peter Gatien was the king of the New York club sceneuntil years of legal battles led to his eventual deportation to Canada. This exuberant documentary charts Gatiens rise and fall against the transformation of New York City, offering a wild ride through a now-closed chapter in the history of NYC nightlife. From the director of Cocaine Cowboys.

Synopsis

As the owner of legendary hotspots like Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium, and Club USA, Peter Gatien was the undisputed king of the 1980s New York City club scene. The eye-patch-sporting Ontario native built and oversaw a Manhattan empire that counted tens of thousands of patrons per night in its peak years, acting as a conduit for a culture that, for many, defined the image of an era in New York. Then years of legal battles and police pressure spearheaded by Mayor Giuliani's determined crackdown on nightlife in the mid-'90s led to Gatien's eventual deportation to Canada, and the shuttering of his glitzy kingdom.

Featuring insider interviews with famous players in the club scene as well as key informants in Gatien's high-profile trial, Billy Corben's (Cocaine Cowboys, TFF '06) exuberant documentary aims to set the record straight about Gatien's life as it charts his rise and fall against the transformation of New York, offering a wild ride through a now-closed chapter in the history of the city's nightlife.
--Ian Hollander

Why sadly?

Limelight has been closed for like 10 years. I loved that place but it's gone.

I say bring on the IHOP! I love that stuff too!

Oh and I saw the movie a few weeks ago and it was pretty good. It focused more on Peter than the actual club but it was still very good.
