What genre is the most legit in 2011?

Dubstep ... too childish candy etard emo. overplayed. everyone's heard it already and is starting to get sick of it. zero cool points.

Post Dubstep / Future Garage ... creative percussion! boring music.

Tech house ... people woke up and realized this genre is a bunch of filler tracks. NOT cool anymore.

Progressive house ("brogressive"?) ... ultra overload epic pop!!!! all the bells and whistles of 20 years of candy rave sounds, stapled and elmer glued all over a swedish house mafia track. 100% dancefloor effective. 0% cool.

Discoey Deep house ... slow loopy edits of late 70's to early 80's disco. where all the minimal/tech house hipsters migrated to. this might be the closest candidate for current legit scene where sunglasses, mustaches, low v necks, and hippy headbands can take shelter, but its starting to die off because people are waking up and realizing the music is slow loopy edits of late 70's to early 80's disco.

Conclusion: EDM ran out of ideas. now what?

hey guize, what's cool to like?

Posted by meriter on Sep-16-2011 16:39:

UK 2-step garage

You clearly don't know anything about GOOD progressive house in 2011.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-16-2011 17:04:

Do you want music that's cool, or music with ideas?

Posted by Adam420 on Sep-16-2011 17:16:

Actually let me rephrase:

You clearly don't know anything about good music in 2011. Who gives a shit what's cool. EDM was never about that anyway.

Obviously he's asking what music is cool right now. What's wrong with that? Does anyone exclusively listen to so-called 'music with ideas'? That's a hundred times more wack than asking what music is cool.

I don't think the slow disco/boogie/house thing is done yet. maybe as much as it was tech house kids trying to stay on the trend, but that's because they are soulless k-tards

"Beat Music'

'nu-bounce music'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTmBUDRNecQ

not sure how to call this one, but there is a cadre of post punk kids making chicago house these days, which i really like. maybe 'alt-house'? 'nu-house'?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iWvj4UQ8zQ

there is a proliferation of 'occultic' electronica and dance music these days, witch house, ghe20 goth1k, dark ambient, with a 'ritual' theme. which i really dig

i also am hearing a lot of industrial/noise tinged dance tracks and dancepunk stuff that is pretty awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=686K_X9C5qU

also there is kind of nostalgic 'nu-electrofunk' stuff coming out that i'm loving

In all seriousness I think deep house has the most to offer from a musical standpoint

If it's so obvious, why does he end his post with "Conclusion: EDM ran out of ideas. now what?" And I suppose it makes perfect sense that you think it's more whack to ask for creatively interesting music than music that scores "cool points".

Posted by stev on Sep-16-2011 18:05:

hate to say it but i agree. deep house always had the most authenticity and staying power. organic instrumentation, black vocals, its hard to diss.

Posted by stev on Sep-16-2011 18:10:

system-j, just read the title and answer.

Posted by meriter on Sep-16-2011 18:11:

yeah and it's defined more by a 'feeling' and not by a particular soundset

Posted by stev on Sep-16-2011 18:28:

kind of hard to get that same feeling with a different palette of sounds though.

hey what about that Embers breaks stuff that supposed to be trendy and cool

Posted by roregi on Sep-16-2011 19:00:

Define legit.

I listen to trance and there are many "legit" tracks out there.

Are you talking about the scene?

Posted by Chimney on Sep-16-2011 19:07:

Just like you, I'm getting bored with today's music. Deep and tech-house simply don't do it for me anymore, and this minimal techno stuff tends to get too repetitive ^^.

I've started listening to other genres as well.

nah, not at all. very little to speak of from a 'musical' standpoint. except for that one that went 'duh duh duh buh dub dub SOOOOUUUUULLL'

he didn't mean 'music with ideas', he meant 'ideas for the next cool new music'. and i don't think he's asking on account of his personal taste, more just out of interest as to what's going on culturally.

distant forlorn burial-esque sped up vocal snippets, its so proper, its in such good respectable taste, i could listen to this for hours. when's the next dive bar gig?

Posted by Mattsanity. on Sep-16-2011 20:07:

the most legit genre in 2011 is ironically enough, music that pays homage to the retro era. in this case, it's breakbeat techno that was prevalent during the late 80's and early 90's.

I agree with this analysis. Basically the next step is for everyone to retire so that the new generation of producers can come in and steal old ideas, present them as their own, and not have anyone call them out on it because all the old heads that knew the old stuff are now gone.

I hope you just mean produceres with old heads...
The old ones have forgotten about their early days, often in other genres. Might be good to refresh their memory.
