to this day, I still don't know all the official subgenres of trance

for example, those trance tracks made in 1999. Ishkur has tremendous knowledge but he calls those epic trance or dutch trance. what's the verdict on the official adjective to describe those uplifting hands- in-the-air trance joints?

To me, these are the official subgenres in the trance domain:

I guess so. I just hope members here use those adjectives more often.

wait a second, is there an official "Trance Parliament" ?
I'm not familiar with the trance laws and whats so called 'official sub-genres', I prefer listening to quality music instead, no matter of its (sub)genre.

Tech-Trance is a legit genre

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-22-2011 14:21:

Trance-twats love nothing more than to endlessly sub-divide the genre to try and make their insular tastes seem more expansive. So just about every genre tag mentioned in this thread is probably religion to someone, and just look at the madness of the psy-trance sub-genre fuckfest:

Prog-psy
Dark-psy
Morning psy
Twilight psy
Forest psy
Full on psy
Psy-tekk
Psy-core
Psy-dub
Psy-chill
Psy-breaks
Psy-step

A five way division of classic / acid, prog, psy, hard trance, and epic / "uplifting" does just fine. Maybe add tech trance and split psy into prog and full on, if you want to be a bit more precise.

Anything more than that is silly. No, you do not need a split between "modern uplifting" and "classic uplifting," or regular "progressive" and "deep progressive." Good lord...

Don't see the need to put progressive into 3 different substyles. Deep progressive is a nonsense term imo.

Out of curiousity, which psy-genre is the following track from?

No it's not! And i just fixed my list again. Just 4 genres which is more or less the only genres of trance you have to know about.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me though. Trance is basically an offshoot of techno whith a more melodic focus. Why have the parent genre as a prefix? 'Trance techno' would be more accurate, but also redundant.

Full-on/prog-psy crossover. Got the bouncy bassline of full-on, but at the speed of progressive.

it just refers to the kind of pattern it uses. less melodicaly based but rhythmical pattern based while the break resembles trance.

stuff like that does not fit into the 4 listed styles.

I don't know why it seems like such a crime to classify music as a certain subgenre, or create a new subgenre for a newer type of sound. I mean, fuck, House has more subgenres than Psy, and Heavy Metal has more subgenres than any of them.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say on the matter of EDM subgenres.

Don't forget Trouse

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Sep-22-2011 18:19:

I just really knew about the:

Classic
Epic/Uplifting/Melodic
Hard
Tech
Progressive

for psy I can't be arsed to learn all the divisions. I've always liked "psytekk" on Ishkur's guide.

Subgenres in general suck.

There are way too many and too many tracks fit in multiple subgenres.

Personally I get the impression people also don't notice when a track has a specific sound used in a classic track, next to the sound which puts them in the subgenre.
Everything needs to be labelled nowadays.

I don't see why it wouldn't just be "trance". Basing a subgenre on it's rythmic/melodic ratio is far too arbitrary.
Exactly How rhythmic does a track have to be for it to be considered tech-trance?

Pretty much all genres of electronic music are a mix of both elements, with the possible exceptions of tribal, which is technically pure rhythmic music, and a few far reaches of ambient that can be considered purely melodic.
The only other divisions you can make on this front are EDM, which has rythm as it's main focus (makes it danceable) and electronica, which has melody as it's main focus.

This a sensible way to put it I think, and it means that all trance is primarily rythmic music and it shouldn't make a difference if a track is bit more or less melodic.
In fact, trance in itself can be considered a subgenre, in the more melodic regions of techno. And yes, it has grown it's own sound over time, but that still makes adding a techno prefix redundant in my opinion.

Who should be the official in this case?
