HEY NEW KIDS,PROMOTERS",DJS WHO DON'T GET PAID/PAY2PLAY/UNDERCUTTERS - take notes

The Problem.

What a joke....Couldn't have said it better.

joe marella IS the man!

agreed on the other pts as well, especially the whoring out at $100 a night and skipping the apprentice stage. whoever is insisting on paying that rate is more than partially responsible too, however. vicious cycle

Posted by Capo di tutti on Sep-22-2011 05:11:

apprentice and journeymen seem not to be existent...what about playing for free...paying to pay etc? And yes more than 50% of the problem is the people hiring these mercenary fraud djs.

If you don't know who JayT is/was or havent been to one of his parties, you would probably think 'Who is this guy?', laugh and close the window.

But since I do know of him/been to several of his parties, I continued listening to it.

He makes does make valid points, but i cringe a bit while he makes sense.

Yes, those DJs mentioned are dominating the scene still! No ones moving up the ranks!

Posted by hax-a-million on Sep-22-2011 05:26:

the market is oversaturated... which naturally brings us to the current conditions. i don't see toronto's djs forming some kind of labour union or anything to combat the problem though, opens up way too many cans of worms and above all else that's just not how club djs work

edm is pop now, people demand it but most are happy with fluff, which club owners can get for $100/night and if one guy says he wants more it's on to the next available one. until the next club music fad is in full force this is how it will be. hopefully at that time some talent will still be around

@dior homme: i don't know him but i could tell he was sincere and not just talking shit, although it is quite the ramble. read his bio on youtube as well, i'm sure if i were a few years older we would have crossed paths haha

If he did make a comeback...he'd fuck shit up in the best way...frauds would be exposed, forget filling a small venue every week this guy literally helped throw parties with 4 or 5,000 people regularly - and not by stealing or pouring greygoose down bottlerats throats.

i dont understand the money vs dj argument. What does the amount of money have to do with anything? if a person plays for a smaller fee and plays well what is the issue? Also if someone that is just starting out, how is he going to achieve any kind of level without doing shitty gigs with shitty pay (or no pay at all)

i've been to a few oh his parties and i agree with some of what he's saying. He does make some valid points, like learning from older guys is extremely important. Learning the history of music and where it came from. Also all the laptop business with auto sync makes me cringe as well, those guys are really not doing any kind of work other than playing a playlist from top to bottom and getting paid for it. It's fucking bullshit.

Gera, the money thing is about taking away from the art...take outsourcing even in customer service..sure we can pay someone 1$ an hour to do it in india but at the end of the day you do get what you pay for and its not the same service, level or calibre.

Its ppl who throw parties who think anyone can dj and why pay so and so x amount when I can save 300$ and get my cousin who has beat matching software and playlist to do it.

I've been DJing for 15 years and have never used autosync, but I have nothing against it and really don't see how it magically removes the title of DJ from anyone who uses it. It's all about programming.

Yep. Beatmatching IS easy...I'm a bit rusty myself mostly because of using newer technology but programming is huge.

"The most boring generation in the history of people..."

Posted by LightsOut on Sep-22-2011 13:09:

Is the pay to play thing actually happening here? Like, at the venues our scene typically gravitates towards (fw, guv, wrongbar, cz, etc)?

Not on 3 decks it ain't, hence the need for software to do it for you. [/can of worms]

edit: UNDERCUTTERS always makes me think of this

Its true its all about the music when you go to a club imo i don't care if the DJ uses traktor, vinyl, CDJS, Serato or a iPad as long as the music is good.

Just Dance !

Guy has some good points but waaaayyyy too much anger lol. At the end of the day though it is what it is there's downsides and upsides to the situation today versus the one 10-15 years ago. The city has tons of shite DJs as well but who's forcing you to go to them? Just stick to the people with talent actually getting paid proper wages and screw the rest.

One thing I will agree with is general clubbing (not edm as the crowd is completely different) in this city is soulless. Go to Richmond and it's kids trying to get as mashed as they can. Go to King West and it's a bunch of douches going out to say they went out. Yorkville and it's all people trying to act richer than the next one. But none of the average places are filled with people going out to just relax, dance, have fun etc. There's also the hordes of hungry guys who go out to aggressively hit on girls who have no interest meeting guys in clubs. The "I'll hit on 30 girls cause even though the first 29 shut me down maybe the 30th will say yes" type. This consequently turning girls off of going out in the future (sausagefest creation imo). Bottle service to the extent it's present today is another massive detriment to the scene. The average club in this city is a mess farrrrr beyond the $100 DJ is the bottom line but as anything else you pay for in life if you don't like it, don't buy it. There's still enough good joints in this city that despite the mass of shitty ones you can still pick and choose your good times easily.

Well, I do understand what he's trying to say but definitely disagree on a few things.

The scene has definitely changed over the last 15 years, of course, and that's just life. Hell, if we were still throwing raves with 15,000 people than I can guarantee no local DJ would be paid anything less than $1000+ and they would all have the skills. But we don't live in that world anymore. There are TONS of new DJ's and inspiring DJ's that want to learn how to play. Yes beat-matching was the first essential skill you had learn on decks, but it was by no means the ONLY skill you needed. How to mix, program, and understand the crowd are the key tools any DJ needs to learn. And unfortunately you can't learn all those in your bedroom, you need practice in front of a crowd. And I can also guarantee that no successful DJ is going to offer a apprentice program, that would never happen nowadays. So what are these guys supposed to do? Sure using a laptop makes learning easier, but they need to play out to hone their skills. That's why I think it a good thing that are these small lounges/clubs in places like College St where these guys can practice. If they get paid $50-$100 (which isn't likely unless they bring some people as we all know) that that's fine, it's expensive being a DJ with equipment and music ect. And these places aren't really clubs, there is rarely a dance floor, it's just a place to play. Now, none of the proper clubs in our scene are doing this. You won't find a newbie DJ being paid $100 at GUV, FW, CZ ect.....nor will you find DJ's with no skills. The guys at these clubs who do use laptops (not everyone does of course) use them because they can be MUCH more creative with effects, looping/sampling, and playing 3+ tracks. All the guys at that level can beat-match, but not having to do that lets them put more energy and focus into the music. I have never used a laptop, but I can definitely see why others do.

If everyone is complaining there is no new blood coming up the ranks, why is everyone bitching about these sorts of avenues where the new guys can learn? You can't expect new guys to move up if new guys can't learn the trade? And....there are LOTS of other guys who get tons of play time who are very talented in this city. So there is the new generation of DJ's making there way up.

I do agree with a lot he said regarding bottle service ect...

+1

Parkdale used to be my go to area to just relax and have a good time out. But, even that's gone now, its slowly transformed into suburban kids rocking dress code. Still, good places and times can be found, but its a not like it was even 5 years ago.

I 100% agree plus ..... remember the uproar when Erick Morillo Busted out the CDJ's for the first time ....

Times change and so does technology

He wasn't a cool guy back in the day, nor is he one now. Good job on coming off as an irrelevant old-timer though.

lol no

also his claim that the "top end" of DJ pay is $100-150 isn't true either... the low end is double that

I've never personally heard of anyone, ever paying for a DJ gig.

the traktor/beatmaching argument is so 3 years ago lol

this guy gonna tell Richie Hawtin he's not a DJ? what about Marco Carola? please
