Bass drowning out my kicks...wat do?

Hey guys,

I'm working on a track here, and its going fairly well, except for my newb mastering skills.

I have a bassline is a crescendo over 16 measures and the problem is that it drowns out my kick drum as it becomes louder. The kick is very good and has great punch until it gets to a certain volume...

Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Do I need to use compression or what?

Thanks for any help.

think this one thru

the bass is loud when you want the kick to be loud. But if you lower the bass every juncture, the bass is not loud enough. So the bass is perfect except when the kick is playing. So you must do something to that bass when the kick is playing. Hmmm, if only there was a way to lower the volume of your bass when the kick was playing. Does your DAW have volume faders ?

of course the answer you are looking for is side chain but maybe stop and think a little about what the problem is and what the logical solution would be and you will answer most of your own questions.

Cut off everything below 100 Hz on your main bass and add a sub-bass hitting off-beat.

Also sidechain, like L4C said.

If you bassline has plenty of midrange harmonics, you could also sidechain the kick to the gain of a low-shelf eq at about 100-120hz.

The bottom end will duck out, but because it leaves the mids at the same level the human ear can barely tell the difference.
