Monkey Dancer 2 Off-topic, somewhat: What would you do?

So, last weekend I find this Access Virus Indigo 2 on Craigslist to replace my buggy as shit TI. Seller is across the country but I figure I take a leap of faith.

Email him, he says he has synth available, willing to ship it out remotely, sends me the pics verifying, etc. He then pitches a $100 case to ship it in, I figure - OK. I'll buy it too, no haggling - paid for synth, case, shipping + PayPal fees in FULL. He kept pestering when will I pay, so I paid promptly on Monday.

That's it. goes mumm. I keep emailing, finally on Wednesday, he says he'll ship it out. Again, disapears. ON thursday instead of tracking, sends me a number that shows FedEx shipping order was created, they're waiting for the package. Nothing Thu nite or Fri AM - still waiting for drop-off.

So, I keep emailing for info, get no response, no answer on the phone. I tell him that if I don't get actual tracking info by Friday night, I'm placing a dispute with PayPal. Again, no response. Late Fri nite I place a PP dispute, stating item not received.

Today, after numerous emails, I get "hey, sorry, synth shipped but I don't have tracking info. Call FedEx to confirm". Ok, I call FedEx and they say synth is on the way. Before I even hang up, he calls back fuming; WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, WHY YOU PLACED HOLD, YOU SOME UPTIGHT LAWYER ASSHOLE? Starts personal insults, etc.

I'm like WTF???? I told you what I was gonna do, you didn't reply, I had to act. He's like - my acct' is on hold, I got transactions coming out, can't pay for shit, synth is on the way so fuck you asshole, I knew about you right away, you bla bla bla I hung up.

Still no tracking info, mind. So, now the dillema is - do I wait until the synth shows up and drop PP dispute (it will be Friday 30th), release without waiting hoping he won't recall it out of spite, or tell him to fuck off and recall his package/refund my money.

I hate to be dick but I wasn't the one who ignored repeated requests for an update. So, what do you think I should do?

I think there's an inherant level of trust involved in buying stuff remotely, and as a seller you have to be pro-active.

I say keep the paypal dispute in place until the thing turns up and you're happy it's 100% as described, and I mean check every last button and screw.

If the guy ignored you that much, then fuck him tbh. I'd be fuming if I were you.

Posted by aNYthing on Sep-24-2011 20:13:

What pisses me off is, I ask flat out: "What would you do if you were in my shoes", he says: "Well, I'm not in your shoes"

Sounded like a tin foil-hat wearing hippie out of Washington State boonies.

I'm not even sure if I should open the package, sounds like Unibomber. I googled him, the dude actually filed following FCC comment:

HERP? DERP?

Posted by EddieZilker on Sep-24-2011 20:20:

I wasn't going to say anything about your person but it seems like you have a chance to recoup loss in case he shipped a dud. If it had been me selling, I'd have had you a tracking number the next business day and no fucking around with bullshit like giving you an SO#. It's that asshole's fault for sandbagging the delivery and that would cause me to be a little suspicious, in your shoes.

Even if you are a prick, no one deserves to get ripped off.

Posted by cryophonik on Sep-24-2011 20:22:

Hindsight being 20/20 and all, next time you buy something from craigslist, see if the seller has any eBay feedback that you can check out. Not fail-proof, of course, but I'm willing to bet that his eBay feedback would have scared you off before sending him any money.

Dude sounds like a prick who needs to be taught a lesson. I say keep the PayPal account on hold until you get the synth.

Posted by aNYthing on Sep-24-2011 20:36:

Thanks for collective advise, that's what I figure I need to do. It's one thing you call and say, "hey, sorry, I screwed up - now that you have verified that synth is on the way, can you drop the hold?"

I'd be "ok, glad we worked it out"... But sitting on the shipment for 4+ days, not responding to repeated calls/emails and THEN calling me and insulting me for doing what I said I was going to do? After I gave him more than enough advance notice, was VERY polite and patient all the time AND considering that I paid his asking price in full +PP Fee (which he overcharged me for) + Overcharged for shipping (he quoted 2x the shipping price), etc?

Yeah, I think living up to my reputation of being an Abrasive Cockhead @ Large is currently in order. Lesson learned.

you aren't going to see the synth. Cancel the payment if you can. This has scam all over it.

Posted by aNYthing on Sep-24-2011 22:08:

I don't think he's a scammer, if he's one - he's not too bright. You pull money out of PayPal before they get a chance to freeze the funds (as I had it happen to me before).

this dude is just not very "customer oriented" and perhaps a bit of a major hippie/stoner, that would be my guess. His flikr profile has pics of his bikes, ATV, and other crap with identifying info + quite a few bit of pictures of shrooms in the wild. He's either a major fungaphile or psychonaut.

I don't think you're dealing with a stoner hippy. I think you might be mixed up with a type of ultra right-wing christian who refer to themselves as "sovereign citizens". They are the worst sort of people in the United States to get mixed up with. They sue over anything, will file liens just to cause you problems, and, in general, are pains in the ass, capable of almost anything.

The dude just sounds like a waster.

Wait for the synth to turn up and make sure it works and only then drop the dispute.

I mean whyt type of idiot gets someone to buy their synth at a an acceptable price then ships it four days later without taking note of the tracking info and then doesn't respond to multiple emails until it's too late.

I don't know why you're even considering it. I got ripped off by this spanish guy once through ebay - he kept sending receipts from the spanish postal service to show he'd sent it but all they could confirm was that something had been shipped at some point by that guy. By the time I waded through the bullshit it was too late to get my money back.

Never again. ******s get 48 hours to respond / deliver tracking details or that dispute on.

How do you figure? He's not very "WWJD" with a potty mouth like that... Some clues, when he was blowing up, he's like "How tightly wound, are you MAAAAAAAAAAN???? What are you, some kind of a lawyeeer, MAAAAAAAAN??? [[insert some favorite expletives here]], yada yada yada

Posted by aNYthing on Sep-25-2011 01:53:

funny part is, he responds to PayPal dispute with "buyer called and verified that package shipped. RELEASE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>THE LEAN>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ON MONEY>>>>>>>>>>>>>NOW!>>>>>>>>>"

Those chevrons are SRSBZNS!!!! Hope PayPal doesn't fall for these scare tactics.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-25-2011 01:59:

if you can count pay pal on anything, is that they will not release that money for a good month or 2. I sold a 1600 item on ebay, followed every direction, i even made like a fucking documentary photo style of packing the item, mailing the item but the guy says he never got it, and well paypal seems to think they will get money from me.

Posted by aNYthing on Sep-25-2011 02:11:

I fucking HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE fucking PayPal with every cell of my body... Alas, in this country with all it's anti-trust laws, it seems quite interesting that a company like eBay is allowed to get away with insisting on PayPal as the only source of payment. I previously was able to accept transfer/money order/etc. Nowdays - nope.

That's why I hardly sell anything with fleabay/scampal anymore. I prefer to deal with CL...

Though, I must admit that in this particular situation, I do appreciate the nasty shennanigans PayPal likes to do, given an opportunity.

lastly, I've been an eBay seller for over 11 years with a 100% FB and never a history of any seller complaints. Recently, I got a notice that my transactions with PayPal are subject to hold. Why? I was late paying my eBay invoice.

Thanks eBay, you just lost my business. I can't wait for Google or even Facebook to create some serious alternative for these ******s.

I think Google is sitting on the gold mine with an opportunity as ripe as auctions but... who knows what they are thinking.

I can't wait to GTFO off eBay, once a viable alternative is presented.

The phrase, "money changer", is a biblical reference that, in conjunction with the accusation of you being a lawyer and the rest of the bizarre "filing" with the FCC, hints at a system of right-wing beliefs. In addition to the general shadiness of this transaction, the fact that he's challenging you in the way that he's challenging you indicates a sense of entitlement (e.g. the "I'm not in your shoes" remark). Sovereign Citizens don't believe in the validity of the law and, until that synth is in your hands, his behavior is entirely consistent with such beliefs.

It's entirely possible that this guy's just a waster but just because he's not "turning the other cheek" doesn't mean he's not Christian Identity. Such civility is reserved for fellow "Christians". If he has reason to suspect your Jewish identity, you're probably not going to be accorded very much "good faith". They are not known for their WWJD tempers.

Jesus Christ... dude.. um... you may be on to something... GTFO:

UMM...
googled his name and it came up as a pastor of some local church in his zip...WHAT?

edit: NVM. that pastor is a black dude in late 50's. This one sounds like a hiptard in his 30's.

Posted by EddieZilker on Sep-25-2011 03:58:

Eh, he's hopefully just some stoner dumb-ass (even though the "LEAN" [SIC - s/b lien - made the same mistake in my post] in his dispute does concern me). I'm curious to find out what you wind up with, if anything.

Posted by aNYthing on Oct-16-2011 23:43:

Overdue update: Synth came in OK, actually working - some smudge/left overs of foam in the jacks but otherwise OK. Looks like it was gigged a and needs a bit of a clean up... but surprisingly working.

I expected far worse...

Glad it worked out, man.
