Hi. Mostly an Amon Tobin listener. Seeking recommendations.

Though I enjoy electronic music, the only artist whose work I really listen to most of the time is Amon Tobin. I have listened to some other artists (like RJD2), but everywhere I turn, I can find no artist which matches the feel of Tobin's work. So, naturally, I decided to register on this electronic music board to gain a few recommendations on artists that are similar to Tobin.

I want to hear something jazzy, slow, downbeat, with minimal vocals. Basically, anything that captures the feel of Tobin's album "Supermodified". I have listened and enjoyed Tobin's other work, but out of all of his albums, I like Supermodified the most for the traits I have previously mentioned.

So, there ends my spiel... Any suggestions?

Thanks for trying, but only the last track resembled something I was looking for. Another favorite artist of mine is Phutureprimitive, if anyone knows who he is. I do not adore him as much as Amon Tobin, but I do like his sound, too.

Man, finding good electronic music is hard. Especially when you either dislike or love tracks the moment you first hear them.

Bonobo, Lusine...Supermodified is in a class of its own, though, IMO.

Eh. Tried Bonobo, but I personally don't like his use of vocals all that much. But great sound, though, I can't deny that. Might give him another try.

Yeah, you might be right. Supermodified is really a true gem in terms of its composition. Pity Tobin has been moving away from that jazzy, Latin feel, in favor of a more avant-garde feel in ISAM. (Though it was starting with Foley Room.)

Try the album Animal Magic, I don't think there are a lot of vocals there. And the live sessions are also really good.

I saw Amon DJ once, he was closing the main stage at a festival. One of the darkest, most disturbing sets of music Ive seen (and Ive seen Chris Cunnigham do a live show ). It was fucking awesome.

THIS SET comes very close to replicating what Tobin did. Thoroughly recommend it.


Also for bonobo you might want to check out THIS CD. The Quantic mix of the Plug is sublime. In fact, check out Quantic and Four Tet, might be waht youre looking for.

It's always funny when people pick up a completely unique artist and try to find something similar. There's a reason why Amon Tobin is Amon Tobin, and why he's regarded as one of the most exceptional producers these days. So in short - people like Amon Tobin, Autechre, Aphex Twin and FSOL don't really have a competition and there's a good chance you'll find everything recommended disappointing.

On the other hand there are certain qualities of his music that can be found in works of Bonobo (last two albums if you like live, non-sequenced jazzy music, and everything before if you dig sample-heavy music more), Cinematic Orchestra (though it's questionable if they are really electronic), Jazzanova (first album), The Flashbulb (last two albums), Jan Jelinek (Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records - while it can be claustrophobic and heavy at times, there's a lot of similarities with Tobin - particularly the treatment of glitch and fx in general) and some other acts on Ninja Tune.

You listened to other stuff on Ninja Tunes from the 1990s? That label almost single-handedly defined that downbeat instrumental jazzy style, and most of their signature acts like DJ Food, The Herbaliser and Coldcut specialised in that sound. Most of these acts sound a lot more "straightforward" than Tobin, but it depends on whether you like Tobin for the slow jazzy vibes or his particularly unique take on that sound. As has been mentioned, it's paradoxical to praise someone for sounding unique and then ask for more of the same, but you might also get a kick out of other mid-90s lunatics such as U-Ziq and Squarepusher. Their sound is quite radically different, but there is a similar philosophy of playful experimentalism.

Phutureprimitive on the other hand is more of a psy-dub/psy-chill producer.

I have listened to DJ Food, yes. That stuff is pretty solid.

Guess I'll dig into Ninja Tune's backlog a little more.
