Best small room monitors?

Hey everyone,

So, I'm going to be moving into college dorms next year, and want to buy all the stuff I need for production there. Does anyone have any suggestions for small room monitors? I may or may not be treating the room.

I'm currently looking at monitors in the 300 - 500 dollar range, but may go over.

Thanks!

For that price, and considering you already have some RP5s, i'd say a good set of headphones.

I have RP6s, your royal majesty

The RP6s sound good for my room now. I tried them in a more enclosed room and they weren't so sexy anymore. I'm getting the AKG271 MKII cans, so I have that down, but I need some decent monitors.

@CalvP: I did look at both of those. I'll have to go to my local dealer to try them out.

I beg your pardon squire

I've just got some K271's and they're great, although I needed closed back ones for tracking as well. The K240s might serve you better for mixing as they're semi open back, but otherwise pretty much the same thing afaik.

I thought your monitor budget was $1000 though? Or has it changed

I'm still waiting for someone to come in and say
"to be honest, if you just save up $500 more, you can get much better speakers"

KRK's will do, and they will be a world of difference betweeen hi fi speakers. However, I find it very important to have good headphones as well, almost as having decent monitors.

Make sure if you get studio monitors, you get an audio interface with the appropriate connections. You don't want to be plugging monitors into a computer sound card. Check if the monitors have balanced or unbalanced inputs.

Cheap interfaces run from around $50-150 and may or may not offer balanced outputs.

Balanced outputs are more expensive, but will neutralize noise picked up by long cables.

Don't worry I have an interface lmfao.

I currently have a Presonus Firebox, which sucks ass, so I'll be getting one of Focusrite's Scarlett or Saffire cards.

As I said, I'll be getting the AKG 271 MK2 headphones. The only deal I have is with monitors, as I'm not too sure if I want to keep my KRKs. If I do decide to sell them, the cash I get WILL go towards new monitors. Right now I have my eyes on the JBLs; those look like something I'd want to go for.

HE SPEAKETH THE TRUTH.

I've been trying to avoid another KRK-beating session, but KRK's are my last choice in every price bracket.

JBL's are your best bet by far. They actually sound like large driver monitors but don't boom in small spaces. I cannot think of any other monitors that perform as well, either for the money or in a small space.

I use them in a small untreated space and they sound flat and detailed. Sure, you don't get masses below 60hz, but you're never going to get full accurate response in a small space anyway, especially not when it comes to sub frequencies.

Do it. I promise you won't be disappointed.
