what does the little yellow or gray dot in the main forum page mean?

this is the yellow one
the gray one

i mean when i look at the link its says on and off but i've clicked on the forum that i've wanted to enter on both colors (yellow= on and gray = off) and i've been able to get into the forum..

will somebody please enlighten me?

As simple as that... you can read about it in the faq

In other words: the same thing Endre posted
