Creating a mash-up

So i looked with the search button but nothing of interest or use came up. Just wondering if anyone has some tips for making mash-ups using a DAW, not mixing/recording?

I am mostly concerned with the whole what song is in what key. I've looked up some tips for figuring out major and minor scales but its pretty confusing for people who don't know a lot about music theory.

thx

I'm not picking a fight but I honestly can't even stand the concept of mash-ups. It's one thing for a DJ to do it, on the fly, but quite another to create a single out of two songs in order for a DJ to play it. I'm editorializing more than giving any advice but my opinion is, don't. That's my two cents and I'll keep it to myself, from here on out so I don't ruin your thread.

I don't like them either, but I know a lot of people do. IMO, if it would've not been for that Robin S vs Be mashup that Laiback Luke & Steve Angello made, they would've not been as big as they are now. That mashup put them on the mainstream map as it got played all over the radio and they even made a video of it.

A friend of mine used to make a lot of mashups and a lot DJ's played them. Now, he's touring internationally in major part thanks to them.

Now back to the OP. For creating mash ups, Ableton will be your best friend. To find out the keys, you can either buy the tracks off Beatport or when you play them on their player it shows you the key. Another tool you can use is Mixed In Key. It's not 100% accurate, but for the most part it is.

And last, you can use the wheel below. There's instructions on this link on how to use it.

Tsk, tsk, you need to go further back in mashup history than those two pretenders.

I remember the whole mushup thing nearly a decade before either of them were about - I used to play out in Toronto in 2001 and mashups were the flavor of the day then - remember all those Stardust Music Sounds Better with you mashups? The madonna - Holiday one? Paul Van Dyk - found an Angel?

Armand Van Helden and Fatboy Slim can be largely held responsible for the popularizing mashups. They did a boxing ring style battle event in London that was mashups only, all night. I think it was 1999 or something.

I think the first major charting mashup was Fragma - Toca's Miracle (Coco's I need a miracle with Fragma - Toca Me).

Actually, scrap that - I think the first really big one (which is fucking excellent btw) was Gat Decor - Passion vs Degrees Of Motion - Do you want it right now. Fucking love that track.

Technically, layering a vocal over existing track and putting that out as a record is a mashup and if that's the case then Chicane's Offshore is a mashup (If I remember right some welsh DJ mixed them at a club and then judge jules heard it and copied that mix for his Radio 1 show and then before you knew it a limited bootleg mashup was available, so Nick Bracegirdle (Chicane) thought "Fuck that, time to cash in" and he licensed the vocal for an official release.

Yea, mashups been around for a long time. I used to buy them as white labels and I def remember that Madona one.

What I meant was that because of that Robin S mashup, Laidback Luke & Steve Angello blew up. Outside the EDM circles, hardly anyone had heard of them, at least here in LA. Once they made that mashup, they (Angello & Luke) blew up.

Oh sorry, got it, I thought you were saying mashups blew up because of them.

Anyone recall "Remember Magnetic North" and "Cowpander"?

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Oct-04-2011 23:54:

i made all kinda of quick edits/mash ups when i dj's my brothers wedding.

Here is one i managed to find. Made this one the plane ride there. A bunch others too.

played a few mash ups already done

the problem is that mashups allow people to do creative things and 99% of people suck at music so it usually doesn't work out. But if you know what you are doing, which is 1% ofd djs, mashups are great. IT allows you to put vocals on any track and that is the one thing EDM lacks. If you are a dj, then you know to play for girls as guys dance because girls dance. Girls like vocals. do the math.

rap made the mashup. Laid back luke and angello have contributed nothing.

working on a mash up now... will post soon. watch this space.

I'm a fan of mash up's to be honest. I think it helps you stand out from the regular people who just play 10 tracks pretty much fell length whilst standing round with nothing to do waiting for the next moment to mix another track.

I recently played at Digital in Newcastle (UK) and managed to do a couple of live mash up's that worked a treat. The tracks I used were....

Alex Kenji - What's up and Truelove - Rock the Casbah

&

Arno Cost - Lise mashed up with Cirez D On off

I just think it's something different for the crowd to get involved with, throw them off course and keep them interested.

I've used ableton a few times to try and do them but I definetely prefer doing them live.

It's a good start, and a good idea. I'd also smash some of the g6 vocals on there, some breaks, glitch edits, and some coldplay. Hmm... actually, I'd also add ke$ha too.Maybe lady gaga. Although then it's more of a glitch song.

Now that I think of that we could throw in a glitchcore solo in the middle. Hmmm...

Hahaha. I don't really listen to mash-ups, I am not too fond of them. My friends often play mashups when we hang out, your mashup (djmyavatarcausessiezuresryan's that is) sounds like it's the same quality.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Oct-07-2011 21:59:

see that is the perfect example of musical retards trying to do mashups. Clashing keys is provably something you might want to address djRyan. Awful. PRetty much a point in case that any musical tool in the hands of a tool will result in some god awful shit.

i like this one.

i think there is a better mix out there but the two work great.
THe power of the mashup is putting a similar stamp on something someone might not particularly be prone to like. Especially in EDM which alot of people hate.

Here is another one. Just one note that should of been changed but ohwell. THe fact that the note wasn't adjusted just shows you how tone deaf people making these things are. Kinda scary.

But its the type of thing you just play for 1 verse then go to the main tune.

great combo here. As a dj, you could not get away with the original even if it is good but just by adding biggie , you have made this club music.

another one.

the way i see it , mashups are just lazy remixes for which you will never get cleared so you just do a half assed mix that only sounds good loud in a club full of drunks. The worst is when they aren't even using stems and the mixdown is always just awful but again , you can't tell in a club.

Posted by DNA_pl on Oct-08-2011 18:56:

I remember that once I was wondering if I'm able to do a mashup. I needed to find the tracks which worked together nicely, also I wanted to somehow improve the track, not make it worse.

2-3 hours was enough to create first mashup
Cosmic Gate vs Sander van Dien - Not Enough Greece (Gregory Mashup) by Greeg

to be honest, creating mashup is ... easy and actually boring. I mean, 99 % of mashups are just lazy crappy "mixes", while there are only few gems that really improve somehow the track.

I mean, it ok, if you just use your mashups when DJing but other than this (doing mashup just for the purpose of doing mashup) it seems to be some "cheap, lazy remix"

Posted by Raphie on Oct-09-2011 09:26:

It's not even a mash-up it's a total remake with new session singers and all, made to sound like a "cool" mashup..... strictly peaking it's closer to a "cover" than a "mashup"

you should have made this a tripple up with "like a G6" mashups are too easy... "now i'm feeling so fly, with my bass down low...."

Or "with my bass like a G6" really too fucking easy...
