Oh young lad, you'll find that there is so much complexity, sophistication, absurdity, douchebaggery (Tiesto), complicated, stupid, interesting, amazing, and insane things about what the Trance genre is. If you want my own advice... I would say get some ecstasy and experiment with the older type of Trance songs. Of course you can disregard this, but since you asked for advice I'll say it anyone. My own personal list of favorite songs to listen when rollin' balls:

That's my small list but unfortunately I had discovered recently that my favorite songs were actually the songs that ruined Trance. Seriously. These songs were good but this is what opened the door for what really destroyed Trance and made it shit. So, I dunno.

You could try listening to classic (acid house) Trance.... but I doubt you would like it right now. I highly suggest getting into it, but if you can't find yourself liking classic acid house Trance, then listen to songs from the same era of the songs I posted above. (1997-2002)

I've never listened to classic acid house Trance while on ecstasy or Acid, but, I have to try it someday. And fuck all the haters who say Trance can't be appreciated while on drugs.

Wow what a video... an interesting thing to learn about these guys. I have never seen so much insightful wisdom ever in a video until I have seen this one. Usually, I've only seen interviews of Tiesto being a total douche and vouching about "being musically free." But this interview is golden, I can see the perspective from the top dogs on what they think, feel, and view on the Trance genre itself. Amazing. I am so glad my perspective matches with theirs. It's such a shame. These guys are probably the ones who jump away from the bandwagon when Trance got overexposed.

Well, I did not expect this many replies, thanks to all! I didn't reply straight away as I've been rather busy, but I really appreciate the help you've given so far! The songs, and links, are all really great and I'll be listening to/watching them ASAP. Taken everything on board that people have said so far.

So naive, but I didn't know Trance went back so far, nor did I know that a good era was 1997-2002! Let alone 1990-1996. I've already listened to some of the links to the olders tracks, and I do genuinely like them a lot. Didn't realise, but I loved this song when I was a kid and I didn't realise it was trance (lol if it isn't)..it's Push - The Legacy.

However, where can I find the songs to listen to though - as in, the tracks themselves? Shall I just rummage around the net for the best trance for each year, or on like forums etc? What about old ASOT episode's tracks? Sorry for the questions!

By the way, trance needs to come back - just when I was getting into trance, I asked my friend to ask her brother if he knew any trance artists (as he likes his electronic music) and he said to check out Deadmau5. Well, says he's Neo-Trance on Wikipedia, but he doesn't sound like trance to me. Sounds nothing like Rank 1's - Opus 17, which I'm listening to at the moment.

No Deadmau5 is not trance at all. It's just shit.

Anyway to answer your question, if you are really serious about it I would buy a turn table. You have the benefit of living in the UK where I'm sure there are many used record shops and older trance abounds. That and old vinyl / CD compilations though Discogs (though again, being in England I'm sure you can find them locally more often that not). With regards to specific labels / compilations to look for, I'll let others chime in.

oh and

Discovering Trance in 2009 is 10 years too late to really appreciate and understand Trance and its evolution. Its nice to listen to Tracks, or even RadioShows, but Trance/EDM shines with the Compilations and Live DJ sets.

The great thing about House/Trance/DnB/insertsubgenre/ is that they sound great when mixed and transitioning to each other. The thing I like about Mixes/Compilations is that you never have to change the track, you never have to skip tracks, everything just flows into one another.

Check out "A Trip in Trance" compilations, ASOTs, old PVD/Ferry/Oakenfeild/Digweed stuff. Their sets are amazing.

And also, the more you listen to Trance, the more you will want to branch out and hear other music. Because as good as Trance is, it has its Limits has Club/Dance-able music, and this is where House, Progressive, DnB, come into play. Variety is the Spice of Life.

There are a huge number of trance classics compilations released every year by the likes of Gatecrasher, Euphoria and the Ministry Of Sound. The tracklists for all of them are very similar, so if you pick up two or three of those you'll probably have a good overview of all the biggest trance tracks of the 1999-2002 era. If you head over to the DJ Promotion section of this site, you'll quickly come across many "Trance Classics" mixes that you can download for free.

I'm sure people will start recommending you Harthouse and Platipus compilations straight away, but since you're clearly new to the music you may as well start off with the enjoyable melodic classics and move into the deeper stuff from there.

A lot of masses don't really want to take the time, dedication, patience, and effort to understand and fully decipher Trance. I don't blame them. Trance is a lot of work to fully master listening to. When you first hear Trance you don't understand it's purpose that it is supposed to hypnotize and give you these amazing visualizations. It just sounds like noise because of all the complex layers of sounds.

When I first started, Trance was already dead. But it wasn't dead to the point of where it is now. You are going through a similar experience I went through. We both are/were in the era where Trance is at its grave.

I must admit the only reason why I stuck with Trance was because I heard some classics being played live. The live experience of Trance is beyond anything you'll ever see. Truly uplifting, and life changing. Get yourself to a real Trance concert if the opportunity EVER comes. It's a once in a lifetime chance nowadays.



Come to us for some proper advice, or you can try trance.nu but I never registered there.

As for anything else, Trance is self learned and self interpreted.

If you want to experience trance in its purest form, it won't be in a concert environment.

Now, the psy trance scene...

In it's purest form, yeah I'll never be able to hear Pure Trance live. Pure Trance (90-95) had a more garage sound to it.

Unfortunately I was only able to hear Silence, Suburban Train, and Gouryella, and a few others live. But it was Silence, despite being overrated, was the one that opened the doors for me to explore deeper into Trance roots. Hearing that song live changed my entire life. I didn't cry, but I never felt so impacted by the power of that song. No wonder it's anthem/epic Trance.

It's ironic, because when I first heard Silence, I hated that song. It was too long, it sounded weird, it didn't make sense, it wasn't upbeat. It was ugly. It took about 3 or 4 years of listening to cheesy fluffy Trance until my experience and taste developed to like the older sounds. And it took 5 or 6 years for me to get into classic acid house Trance. And this is the point I'm trying to make to OP. He will find stuff he doesn't like, and will probably even hate it for years. Until one day it'll bring him many wonders.

Yeah, that's long sort of been psy trance's pro and con. It really hasn't changed much in over 15 years, which is good if you don't mind dipping your toes into the scene every once in a while. You know what you're going to get when you want your fill, and can ignore it for months or years after, secure in the knowledge you probably won't be missing much in the interim.
