shoe etiquette

when you walk inside someone's place, what do you do?

do you take them off without asking? ask? walk right in?

does it depend on who they are? family? friends? stranger?

does race play a factor? religion?

does the reason for the visit matter?

first impressions upon entry are always memorable. how you handle your shoes is important.

Shoes off unless they're wearing shoes in their house.

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Oct-12-2011 01:39:

i always just follow my hosts lead. if their shoes are off then mine come off as well. sometimes it's not always that obvious, in which case i'll ask. most often i'm taking my shoes off entering peoples houses though

as for race - well i guess most asian people i know always take shoes off, so that's good. i had a party at my house sometime over the summer where a friend of mine djd and then another friend of ours, a korean, djd as well. the korean dj brought a lot of his friends (which i was happy about) and they all took their shoes off! it was so great. didn't have to worry about mopping the floor the next day. all of the white kids that showed up after saw 20 pairs of shoes at the door so they took theirs off as well

I always take them off unless I'm told specifically not to. I have certain friends whose homes are shoes on homes...typically because they have hardwood or tile flooring. I have one friend whose parents have slippers/crocs for all their guests to put on.

I always take my shoes off when at someone else's place. Always have.

I always take my shoes off at my place or someone else's. Right after I take them off I sniff them which gives me a boner.

Posted by Scottaculous on Oct-12-2011 01:52:

Most of the time shoes off. If you're unsure, it's ok to ask.

If the owner is Asian, definitely take your shoes off.

I just ask when I walk in, unless my shoes are wet or muddy or something, in which case I'll always take them off.

Ask Lira.

I wear shoes around my place, and unless it's obvious then I take them off (or half-heartedly appear to them take off until they tell me it's cool) at someone else's.

I don't care too much about someone not taking them off at my place, but doing so is appreciated and usually welcomed with a kind gesture in return (a beer).

Being as I'm a student, we're used to the carpets getting fucked up around here. Hardwood floors would be cool, but I'm sure something would end up happening with that as well.

Egos and testosterone do clash at times when the shoes don't come off. Shit happens.

It must be an Australian thing

Could well be. I mean, why take off your shoes if you don't have to, right?

Posted by FuzzQi on Oct-12-2011 02:54:

Yeah, it's comfortable ay.

Could also be a photographer thing I guess.

Anyone who wears shoes in their own house is a heathen.

I do sometimes, but mostly only in the winter. Spring, summer and autumn are warm here, so I walk in and ditch my shoes in my office.

I like the sound of my shoes on the polished wood floor. I don't care if I'm going to hell, I LIKE IT THERE.

I like the idea of specified "house shoes" or slippers, but I really don't like the idea of wearing the same shoes inside that you've been wearing outside all day, and it drives me mad when someone just walks into my apartment without taking their shows off. Incredibly rude, imo.

Yeah, I like when people take their shoes off at my place too. I have a mixture of carpet and porcelain tile; and I always am barefoot or have socks on (winter time) instead of shoes. I expect everyone else to do the same. Obviously, if we're going in and out from the yard, sure...but once outdoor stuff is done, then off they go.

Posted by FuzzQi on Oct-12-2011 03:20:

It's ok, I'd ask you first

Posted by srussell0018 on Oct-12-2011 03:25:

I would make you take your feet off.

I have all hardwood floors, but I don't think that really matters. Dirt is dirt. I don't want it on my floors.

In my house we've always left our shoes on if it's a dry day.

When I have visitors, I let them know as they enter the house to "just leave your shoes on".

When I am the visitor, I take my shoes off without asking.

If the owner of the place makes it a point, as I do, of telling me to leave my shoes on, then I will.

Posted by KilldaDJ on Oct-12-2011 06:04:

yeah i just kick em off, kind of auto programmed into me

Posted by Quazar on Oct-12-2011 08:38:

I ask. Sometimes people prefer you to keep them on.

I take mine off, but when people come over I let them do whatever, unless it's raining or something.

Posted by Chimney on Oct-12-2011 12:20:

Depends on the person. Usually I have the type of friends where I don't take off my shoes.

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Oct-12-2011 13:37:

shoes off...then pants
