richie hawtin talks**** about vinyl, gets bashed..

Everyone has their own ideas in their head & each of us have the freedom to use whatever instrument they feel most comfortable with. For me, as everyone already knows, the turntable has been replaced by the computer & other gadgets that I use today. But as I said, that's just my opinion... That doesn't even sound like that much of a burn to me, I think people got a little touchy. People using vinyl to me is the same as driving a classic or muscle car. Sure it's not the most technologically advanced, efficient, easiest thing to use but in a nostalgic way it's still pretty cool which is why people do it. Sounds like he was just making a simple observation of that...

The comments are definitely what make this awesome though lol

His reply says it all, he wasn't trying to spark a debate or say anything negative about vinyl. As usual, RA jumped on this story early and helped blow it out of proportion.

guy use to play records in early and mid 2000's yet he bashes a guy and calls him 1988 "DJ", shitting on his own history

i can download richie hawtin set from 2006 and wont be able to tell a different from that and a new set, " he thinks hes so innovative and technologically advanced with his laptop, yet the only thing he invented in the last 5 years is a lit up gay cube.

i still dont see what the fuck there is to care about this, he could be a prick like deadmau5 causing a stir and play his fans and bystanders as pawns for promotion. im tired of such games and dj worship.

So am I. He did though retract part of his statement. Meh, as long as they play good tunes I don't really care about much else unless he's a douche to people regularly...

He's probably just bitter about vinyl purists slaying him for going digital.

The whole debate / argument over Vinyl vs. CD-J vs. Laptop is SOOO overplayed.

Anyways, I'm a bit biased so I'll just leave it. But, the intention of that original post wasn't to shit talk vinyl. Unfortunately, RA decided to post it on their news feed (like they do with any minuscule Hawtin related story) and it got blown out of proportion.

I actually thought that cube was a pretty decent idea. When you got to a show you could scan a card and get access to download tracks on your phone, or send a message that got displayed on screens around the venue.

God forbid someone try something new. I don't agree with a lot of the things Richie and Minus do nowadays, but at least he actively seeks out new ways to get his message and music across and make it more interactive. I think that deserves kudos.

ps. I find it funny how personally some peeps take the vinyl argument #whitepeopleproblems

1) Twitter DJ - Updates your twitter feed with whatever track your playing in Traktor. Controversial when it first came out.

interesting idea but not very hard to do, any reputable programmer can write a script that will copy name of the track and copy it into twitter when logged in..


2) Kapture for Ableton - An awesome plug in that saves exact perimeters across an entire ableton set and lets them be stored and recalled at any time.

wasn't this always present in ableton if you play livesets? how else were the sets saved in it before this came around?

first of all his dad made this, only one copy ever made and he doesn't even use this anymore.. intersting idea but what's the point of this?

For sure its easy, but aren't most good ideas? I think the importance of this isn't how simple the coding is, but that here you have a reputable DJ actively giving away all the tracks in his set on a regular basis., instead of being so hush hush about it.

When you save, you save all the parameters of the set at that one instance. With Kapture you can choose exactly when to capture any parameter, and recall it at any time, in real time. It's been getting a lot of great reviews and people have been finding it really useful. With this and a Max Patch, its also possible to recall sequences that can be used for lighting or video as well, and implement them in real time and in sync.

Well they did a few variations of it, but the point is to try new things, nothing more and nothing less. Using midi in djing wasn't the norm when he asked his dad to make this, now, midi is everywhere.

i think it is relevant, electronic music market is a lot smaller than mainstream market to complete the same type of count, although i'm sure Juno.co.uk can do it if they decide to. Also there are a lot more buyers that buy used records for cheap so it's harder to count new sales but trust me its on the rise as well.

cool but other than playing a massive stage setup and constantly switching back a forth between screens/sets i dont really see the practical use of this to the regular user..

midi where, in the mixer? this would only be helpful if you're trying to control knobs on the mixer through the setup on the laptop but again i dont see the point of this, you can use your fingers for that when playing live. (sorry not trying to be a dick about it, unless there is enough reason why midi is implemented?)

agreed, i think after so many years and so many formats it is the only format that has survived for so long as a DJ medium, it is important that we (as a newer generation) continue this trend of preserving it (imo at least).
