Headphone/speaker suggestions

I'm looking for suggestions on quality headphones and speakers. Mainly for listening to music.

What's the word on Beats by Dre? Are they really that good?

if you can avoid headphones always do so, they will fry your ears

Stay away from Beats, they are overpriced POS. Look into Ultrasone, you can get them with a regular headphone jack or balanced or there is always the trusty Sennheiser.

As for speakers, I got some Wharfedale's and I love them. Really great sound quality

If you really want to go over the top, look at some Meridian speakers You might have to sell a kidney though.

I found you a deal on a pair of Ultrasone Pro 900 (unbalanced) for US$370 instead of $600. It is on Amazon.com and it is the last pair. At that price, you really can't find anything better.

If you are looking for over ear I suggest: Shure SRH840




This helps me focus on work and eliminates anyone trying to talk to me. These are fairly big though, but does the job exceptionally well if you really enjoy listening to your music.

Up until last December when I got the Shure's and Senneheiser's in June, I was looking for almost a year for a good pair in both types. I haven't looked back at either. Ironically enough, the Shure are more than half the price of the higher end Beats by Dre. What idiots who think the sound quality of the BBD are 'studio' calibre.

I take the subway about 4 times a week and I laugh at every goofball that wears them. What a waste of your parents money! But what a great ad campaign!

Audio-Technica ATH m50's are deadly. I've also heard good things about the Shure's, however, my research lead me to the ATH's for the best price/performance (picked them up for 90 USD on amazon).

I swear by Bose. I had a pair for a year then lost them. I am extremely picky. When I was replacing them I tried 3 or 4 different highend brands such as Sennhieser and Sony. I ended up returning them and going back to Bose.

I swear by my Shure's. I highly recommend the previous Shure's posted in this thread

I've had my Etymotic 6i for a while and have no complaints - it looks like they're discontinued with the replacement being the hf5 model.

I got it in Hong Kong. They sold it for $60 CDN... and this model has the volume and answer/hangup button (which i didn't really need). They were once $160 here in toronto. but man those were a deal and I knew it right away.

My buddy asked me what earphones to get while in HK and i told him these ones were the best for the price range (without having to break the bank). I soon decided ya ill get them too.

There are the cx300's that are sold at hmv, futureshop, bestbuy etc. that do no have the extra buttons. they are usually $99.

I've seen them for like $70ish around christmas or boxing day. But really those cx300's are $99 and those are good earphones without having to go into shures (which the foam pads after a while deteriorate (which is probably why they give you so many)), bang and olufsen's that are way over priced and also any other sennheiser's above the cx line.

Check the B&W P5 'phones ($300, probably at Apple store & hooked up to iPods for demo), non-dorky appearance. Also Sony MDR7506 at Sony store are often mentioned on the DJ subforum, older design but good sound and under $100. Both these are "closed" types so they won't bother people in quiet places.

My friend & I tried quite a few different headphones last winter and liked the sound of those two the best, he ended up buying the B&Ws (already happy with B&W speakers). He originally got the Dr. Dre Beats but after a while didn't like the excessive bass.

I was considering on testing those, but i found that they had sound leak as well as me hearing many noises while listening even at a high volume. Yes it may have been because i was at an apple store, but your ears also get somewhat 'damp' because of the leather sitting on your ear rather than around or over your ears. from what i concluded a lot of people online have said the same thing also on the reviews on the apple website. i think they are over priced but meh to each their own. they look nice if you ride the subway. but they dont fold down... so make sure you keep them in the case or somewhere safe when portable.


although id rather have those than the bbd. i still dont think they are worth it.


if someone really wants to spend stupid money on headphones then they should shell out $1300 for a beyerdynamics telsa 1. and you'll be free to brag all you want.

i give props to people who have shure's or a higher end sennheiser, simply because the chances of people having those are more because they know something about them and didnt stumble upon a purchase.

I have been using ATH-M50's ever since they came out for spinning, producing or just plain listening pleasure. Great and I mean great headphones for the money, you won't be disappointed.

those expensive headphones are completely useless without a very good amp. will pick up every little hiss, scratch, hum, and glitch produced by an inefficient system, like the kind on an ipod amp. goddamn good amps cost at least as much at the headphones do, too.

ya but, you dont stumble upon a pair like those...

and i mentioned if someone has the coin to buy something stupid, there it is. im sure they can also afford the amp too.
