Since Trance is basically screwed nowadays in most sets...

Since Trance is basically fucked in most sets nowadays..... I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO LET IT GO!!

I have a question guys, and I need your honest input.

Since House is so popular and trendy now, I was thinking, that if I ever DJ for a mainstream-based crowd, I should mix it up with Trance and House.

I think since House beats are generally 126-130 BPM, I think House is a good "Startup."

House should be played at the beginning and as you build the set towards 135-140 BPM, that's when you throw in the Trance songs and end the night/set with some hard hitting Trance.

what do you guys think? Maybe I'm just insane but mixing up styles is not actually a bad idea

Just to be safe, start with some chill Gabber/Hardcore?

Posted by Dj Pluviose on Nov-10-2011 05:55:

Hey Syntonic, how's it going? Hey, I have something to edify you about. Dude, you posted a live video of Cosmic Baby in some other thread. I just thought that video was so cool for something in the 90s.

And then you posted Cosmic Baby - Fantasia and I loved that track. Thank you so much for sharing!

Lol is gabber/hardcore good to start out with? I think some people get creeped out because of gabber though.

Not sure, I'd have to try it someday

Just do what works for you man.

To be be honest, this is what DJs should do anyway. I used to be a regular at a night called Agenda in Manchester, and the resident DJs would play 4 hour sets where they'd go from 125bpm housey/proggy stuff and build all the way up to euphoric trance by the end of the night.

Sadly, most DJs wouldn't know what to do with a four or six hour set - there's no variety in their sound. They're used to doing one job. With trance DJs, most of them only practise the "120 minutes of wall-to-wall breakdowns" glory set. I've been in the second room of a trance night with literally about five people on the dancefloor, and the DJ is still hammering out uplifting supersaw trance like they're in the main room at 3am. People in the trance scene are interpolated into this culture, they expect nothing else. People like you think it's innovative to actually build up the tempo and the energy over extended periods.

Glad you enjoyed the Cosmic Baby material.

Just fuckin' with you about the Gabber, its probably not a good move unless your trying to clear out the club when its closing time.

As System-J pointed out, many Trance DJs nowadays sets have the House first and then bang the Epic-Anthem-Breakdow-Supersaw garbage. It's become obligatory for every Trance DJ since '02-'04; very unoriginal move but its the standard format all follow.

Me, I love variety, otherwise my ears get used to 4x4 very quickly. My philosophy is the more the merrier. Techno is also pretty nice to mix with Trance being that its very repetitive and can be used as bridges or good filler. I don't understand why some people here criticize some TA mixes for having more than one genre throughout a set.

Listen to some of Oakenfold's Essential Mixes from '97 to '99. He kept his sets from going stale incorporating Breaks and DnB/Jungle. I hate to use him as the example but I think you might some insight from them.

Remember, variety is the spice of life.

You are 100% right in this point. I have seen this many times as well. I think if trance is to make a comeback then the young second room DJs need to adapt and build a following by doing something unique. Just playing epic breakdown after epic breakdown in a club feels more like a chill out set then a set to dance to since all they are doing is playing tunes with each breakdown longer then the next one.

To the original poster, I would start off playing pop house (Swedish House Mafia, house remixes of pop songs) then move into some more sexy instrumental house (Fedde LeGrand/early deadmau5...etc) Then try and move into more melodic house like Mark Knight/Toolroom stuff. If the crowd is still with you start getting more melodic by playing some Prydz type stuff. Then just play the mainstream cheese 128 trance if you still have them (Ferry Corsten-Check It Out, Toca Me (Inpetto Remix)....and if you still have their attention you can build it up from there. One thing you have to remember is that trance has too many long breakdowns and the girls want to dance and shake their booties, so that is usually what looses their attention.

Don't forget to record it and put it on Youtube. Must be fun watching those faces

And play this classic: 1993 - Nightraver - We Are From Rotterdam

Always found it amusing from 2:50, that fucking noise, from bad to worse.
Phantastic intro and outro though.

haha so true. nice one. I just started DJing about 6 months ago, but like to think I have a better understanding of how to DJ theoretically (not technically) than a lot of DJs who have been doing it a long time. They continue to play same-same one genre dj sets time after time. And I am from a small town where you hear the same local djs many times a year. My favorite genre is funky/disco house but even I get bored of playing a full set of that and am constantly mixing in a few different genres and making sure that each track has enough unique qualities from the last to keep peoples interest. I got to play at my first outdoor party a while back and opened up from 830 to 1030. I started with 20 minutes of psy-dub (trippy party in the forest, so makes perfect sense) then slowly built up my set track by track from 100 bpm nu-disco to 130 house bangers by the end of it. The crowd seemed to dig it.

I'm not the biggest set junkie in the world, really, but it seems most DJ's could learn from this video:

That sounds like an interesting set, have you ever posted a recording of it online?

Yes, many DJ's do this.

I feel the same, so instead of trance lately I've been listening to progressive breaks which are pretty "trancy" anyway lol
