dealing with an imposed "vocalist" in a club

long story short,

next month I'm playing in the big commercial club in town (not that this means anything good or bad).
Some friends have started a monthly there and this will be the second one.

When there was the first night, there was a guy from the club who was "singing" over the tracks.

This dude can sing, but he's really obnoxious and says stupid things along the lines of:
-I wanna make love to you
-heaaaaaaat (chaleuuur for the french speakers)
-oh yes you are so beautifulllll
-random orgasm sounds
etc etc

yeah totally obnovioux...

Has anyone else ever seen this?

How to deal with this person? If he "sings" over my playing I feel as if I'll want to slap him hard.

This night is promoted(poorly) by a local commercial radio station and he's a guy from the radio station... I don't think we actually have a say about him being there or not ...
(regarding the promotion for the night this second one will have a much bigger promo effort(I'm handling all design and video teaser(yeah ... I'm making a teaser...), seeing as how I saw how little effort was put into getting the word out for this party (from the club and radios point of view, not the monthly organizers)).

One of these things were you compromise yourself, or make your point clear?!

What would you all do?

I'd definitely use the word bugger for starters!

If it were me I'd have a chat with the rest of your 'crew' see what they say so it's not only you that has beef with this lad.

Secondly I'd then ask the management of the club to have a word with him and tell him that they've had negative feedback about some of the things he's been saying over the mic. That way it avoids you guys taking any flack and they can take some of the heat. Unless it's the club that want him there in which case I'd just deal with it if he's part of the package. Find out who hires him or wants him there and then have a discrete word with them.

Play the gayest music imaginable.

Turn his mic down, off. Shoot him?

Back when I was involved in the rave scene in the late 80s early 90s this was common place.
Last time when I encountered it was in around 2003 when I played in Italy.

You can look at it two ways.

You can make his life difficult by playing a lot of vocal tracks with strong vocal content making him sound excessive and out of place.

Or you can play tracks that will give him a chance to strut his stuff and look good and make the night work better as a whole.

My recomendation would be to go for the latter, perhaps even loop sections of tracks with bass and kick sections so that he gets a platform to communicate with the crowd. A good vocalist/MC can make a crowd get into it if done well.

He obviously has connections to the club and they want him there, give him a platform to work with and it could strengthen your position in the club as he may even ask to work with you more often. Make him part of your performance.

Treat this as a learning experience, and make sure you get as much out of it as possible.

Cheers
Nem

An example of a good MC..

and good MDMA.

Don't believe I said earlier that this is a house monhtly night. "Deep house" and surrounding vibes, going into the nitty gritty nastiness as the night progresses.

thanks for all the replies.

Really appreciating the contrasted opinions and options to deal with this.

The mic goes to another mixer(which I have access to), and the sound is all dry (I think I can put effects on it).

I'm not completely put off by the singer, but it does really get on my nerves as to what is being said and how it's very sexist and also not respectful of the music.

Yes he does sing over vocal tracks.

We are looking into figuring something out with the club because this was not previously agreed upon before the first monthly.

I do believe this gig can lead to other real good ones, but if it's to "compromise" myself and the music I'd almost rather not.

Those were the days...

Sure, they are battered, but there was a total oneness on the dancefloors in those days that you don't get anymore. Seeing clips like this always brings it home to me.

what you will need to do is get a bunch of rap acapellas and just take any space he might of had to sing. Done.

Supposedly those days might be about to return. CLICK ME Although granted they'll never be the same as back then. Unfortunately I'm not old enough (28) to know what it was like back then. But of late I must admit the quality has been much much better than in the 2007-2009/10 years when everything went to shit.

BUT! I'm not going to deviate from the OP's questions so let's not get into this.

Good luck with whatever way you decide to approach this situation of yours. Hope it turns out for the best

you could always use a frequency jammer. Just get the model of the mic and it will give you the broadcasting signal. After that , all you need is a VHF transmitter.

just send noise and that should save you until he switches to a traditional mic for the next shows. Or if you have money to burn. You can create a off phase copy and send that to the receiver. Of course to adjust the phase and then recode to VHF might require some expensive hardware. But that would be the funniest as he will just be silent. Or you can broadcast farts. That would be funny too.

Posted by Fuxzz on Nov-23-2011 15:19:

Talking to the club manager sounds like the best way to go, unless you go with the farting ofc.

But to do a gig with someone you don`t feel you want to be associated with seems like a bad idea to me. It may not be that funny to be the DJ with the sexistic jerk "friend" beside.

Good luck

There is absolutely nothing worse than a crappy MC or vocalist at an event. However, I do see potential for a good MC/vocalist to enhance the experience - as long as the guy takes breaks once and a while and lets some tracks stand on their own.

It sounds like you're a bit flexible to incorporating such an element into your performance, and it's just what this guy is specifically doing which is pissing you off - that it's not an over-riding "my music by itself or nothing" type of deal.

If this is indeed the case, I like the idea of trying to work with the guy.

I had a stupid MC once coming out of nowhere. Thing is that the gear was all mine so I decide of what is going through my mixer. Or not. the idiot expressed his dissapointment (to put it midly) so I told him to stuff his microphone where the sun don't shine. Either that or I would have packed up and left.
