Weddings

I've never been to a wedding yet, which is probably a bit odd, since I'm 27. But it just happens that no one I have known well over the years has gotten married yet, and my parents never made me tag along to the weddings of anyone they knew, either.

How many weddings have you been to? Any particularly memorable or unusual experiences with them? Have any thoughts on weddings in general, or the extravagant rituals that surround them?

(My gf is away at her best friend's wedding this weekend, which prompted me to think about this stuff.)

I attended my first wedding this past summer. My cousin in Austria was getting married and we hadn't visited in some time so it seemed like the perfect occasion. I thought it was really enjoyable - an extravagant night with booze flowing, lots of dancing, laughing, and smiling. It certainly didn't make me want to get married - but I do think that weddings are pretty sweet.

i've been to many a wedding.
the ceremony is endurable and sometimes nice,
the reception is much more fun.

btw, if your girlfriend is away at her best friend's wedding,
you better be ready for the "when are we going to get married" discussion when she gets back.

Oh, believe me, the topic has very much been on my mind the past few days.

More importantly, what kind of person doesn't invite their best friend's long term boyfriend to their wedding? Bitch.

They are boring. Food is good sometimes.

I was invited! But work and impecuniousness interfered.

I fucking love weddings!!!!!!!! I have been to many!

I've actually crashed one! I went to one of my buddy's wedding and the reception hall they were at had another one going on right next to it. I waltz right in, drank free beers and danced. I could tell people were staring and were like who the fuck is that guy? It was fun!

I was invited to be a best man at a wedding - talk about a ripoff.

If you're ever invited to be a part of a wedding, stay away!

What kind of fun is it to pay for a flight, tuxedo, hotel, etc. just to see your friend indirectly tell you that your friendship won't ever be the same again. Fuck that.

Weddings are good for one thing and one thing only: open bar.

Posted by Lews on Nov-27-2011 05:38:

Only one I've been to in the last few years was my friend's sister's last year. No hard liquor, but a few kegs of beer and a fuck-ton of wine led to it being a fantastic night.

I'm kinda "meh" about weddings. Some are ok, some suck pretty badly.

[random Stu story]

I actually got 'fired' from being the best man at my (ex) best friends wedding, lol. Uninvited, too.

He got together with this obnoxious, loud bogan chick (after cheating on his previous, lovely, intelligent gf to get with said bogan). I got along alright with her, but personally, there's only so much bogan I can take, and he used to complain all the time.

My friend was/is a total child (manchild?). He can't cook for himself, and if left to his own accord, he won't clean, or do anything at all, really. Which is fine, cos he was my friend, and I didn't have to do any of that shit for him. Wtf do I care? Basically, he was looking for a partner that was just like his mother, and bogan-chick did all that sort of shit for him.

I kept my mouth shut for soooo long, lol. They kept having all these huge, stupid bogan fights and nearly breaking up all the time, and I just got the shits and told him what I thought. Hilariously, he said "Yeah, you're probably not far off". Then he told his girl what I said

Oh fucking lol. Screaming bogan woman on the phone. Blah blah blah cunt this, blah blah blah faggot that. "My brothers are going to beat the shit out of you" was probably the highlight of the conversation

He's not allowed to be friends with me any more, though we tried to patch things up a couple of times....

Never mind. He's too busy with his 5 kids to do anything but work, lol.

I warned him

Now that I think about it the last two weddings I went to had barely any alcohol. One was intended to stay entirely dry as well (and the other had like 500 people at it and the bar was not free (nor cheap)... ).

I'll go to great lengths to get out of going to a wedding. I've still wound up going to five, though, although one of those was just ten people in the judges' chambers at a courthouse and then dinner afterwards. That wasn't so bad.

I generally find weddings to be utterly tiresome affairs. There's a lot of things that contribute to that. In the first place, I'm not a big believer in marriage, to say the least, and so I typically feel like at least one of the parties involved are making a big mistake. That feeling has been repeatedly vindicated in my experience as well: only one wedding I attended involved a couple still together today.

Furthermore, I generally don't have much patience for the inane human need to ritualize their personal affairs, and weddings frequently exacerbate matters by bringing religion--or, the specter of religion--into the picture.

Additionally, I much prefer small social gatherings to large ones, especially where I don't know most of the people well (or at all), which leaves me in the position of having to censor myself down to the lowest common denominator or risk causing social friction, and generally leads to more repetitive and less substantive social interactions.

There are other small nuisances, too, like frequently having to travel a long distance to attend, and the food and drink provided is usually not to my taste. Overall, they're a pain to go to, and not a particularly enjoyable experience.

Only ever been to one.

I've been to at least 10. Every time I go to one I think more and more, "I never want to do this."

pretty much spot on.

I would be willing to register as married for tax reasons and some other benefits, but a big church (thats out of the questin for me anyway) or any kind of big party...well if the significant other really wished for it i guess its not completely out of the question but not unless i get something out of it as well.

Like the same amount of money she spends on her wedding day, i get to spend on a new shiny red italian sports car that it just for me. She doesnt get to enjoy it, just like i probably wont enjoy the wedding, and under no circumstances does she get to complain about it.

I'm not a fan, nor of funerals especially where 'god' is pushed into us. If I get married, he won't be mentioned and when I die it won't be there either. Listening recently at a family friends funeral just made me realise how ridiculous the words actually sound when you read them out. Singing hymns & the lords prayer, they do nothing. They don't comfort or do anything of note. My best friend gets married in 12 months time and I'll be there but I'm not a big fan of them either.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Nov-27-2011 15:35:

Don't get me wrong, I've been to some great weddings - good food, good music, open bar - and couples that truly have a spark. I'm just not sure I ever want to go through all the motions of having a public union. The government already sees us as married anyway, so what's the big deal? I think if I ever do it I'd like to go away somewhere with just the immediate family....get married on a beach somewhere.

Posted by Ian on Nov-27-2011 15:40:

that's what I think too. My friend has issues as her fiancee has a lot of family who are expecting to be invited to a castle in scotland who they never see and she hasn't even met some of them in 14 years of being with him, plus his little teenage sister threw a fit when she couldn't be a bridesmaid. Way too much stress and at the end of the day it's only a day. My brothers was alright aside from the pastor being a bit too goddy for me. I nearly fell asleep to some of the shit he spewed out which was an issue as it was roasting in there with no a/c on in that part. close friends & family, someone to legalise it all, good meal and that's all you need.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Nov-27-2011 15:47:

Plus the fucking money. If I'm gonna be blowing that much cash, I'd rather spend on it a vacation.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Nov-27-2011 15:48:

Lol, blowing.
