128bpm Psytrance?

I found this and want more like it:

^^^ this one is at 130bpm, i prefer 128bpm.

can anyone list other psy tracks that are at house tempo (125-128bpm)?

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Dec-06-2011 19:54:

Only prog-psy, which doesn't sound much like this.

Posted by stev on Dec-06-2011 20:15:

exactly. unfortunately i just dont like prog psy.

here's one at 127bpm (apparently from the same mix comp in '96):

Behold!

this might be 'psy-sludge'

Why such a specific preference for BPM? I can understand not wanting to deviate by 10 or more but don't see the advantage in seeking tracks within such a narrow margin. I'm actually just curious - not trying to harp on you.

I like

Not sure if you'd class it as psytrance, but how about 'Alex Stealthy - The Way It Should Be' (125bpm)?

Or some of the stuff by In'R'Voice:

Take any psy and slow it down to desired BPM

Ah shit actually, just remembered some tunes by Karmahacker which are pretty slow:

This, I quite often play psy stuff thats made at 140 - 145 down at around 135. I'm sure you could slow down stuff in the 130 - 140 range.

Explore the minus side of the pitch slider, as long as it works in context it wont sound slow and theres often a groovyness to faster tracks that only comes out when theyre slowed down.

As others have pointed out Karmahacker and In'R'Voice (same Russian producer) is probably your best bet.

In alternative Excizen last album includes some stuff that could fall in this category: http://www.beatport.com/release/bea...world-lp/834756.

Atmos and Perfect Stranger (pre 2008) are also good bets as they don't produce the standard prog-psy you said you don't like.

system-j's suggestions are really nice, rebel9's a bit too dark, sounds like a funeral, but ill mess around with it.

re: bpm. i usually like to drag tracks down as there is a grooviness in some tracks when slowed down. but recently i did an experiment where i tagged every file with the bpm and sorted the files by bpm, and mixed files in the same range, and now i never want to go back to the old way. im hooked. its so much less stressful, less unpredictable, energy level more consistent.

I've always done that, and now Beatport offer keys I've started keying all my tracks too. It does make mixing so much less stressful. I would never dare play an unplanned set before because I was terrified I wouldn't be able to find a suitable track in key before the current track ran out. Now I know exactly what tracks I can use, and if I don't have anything suitable I know what to buy. For me, the holy grail of DJing is to find a track at every BPM range and every key for every job, so I can always select a filler, an anthem, a builder, etc.

i havent done the key thing yet, im just going by ear what sounds like it would transition well, or "flow" well, from one to the other. or what sounds good overlayed the other.

but anyway, got anymore examples?

Try out some of these. I played these at 128 BPM in my march mix, they're on the techier side:

Or if you want something that sounds like an electro/psy crossover:

I can only tell if something works together harmonically when I play two tracks over each other. So I might get a track all ready to mix in but I find out it's not in key, so I have to find another record. Just stresses me out massively.

I don't know about other examples. I only remembered the Karmahacker tracks because someone mentioned In'R'Voice which is his alias. Even relatively slow psy-trance is around 133bpm.

Psytrance hasn't always been so fast. Go back to the beginning and there were plenty of great tunes in the sub-130 BPM range. Actually, many of the early classics (pre-Oakenfold hype) were closer to 120 BPM, e.g. The Overlords - Sundown (which was sped up for re-release on TIP in 1996).

These days you'll find plenty of psytrance at around 128 BPM, but maybe it isn't to your taste. The majority would be some variant of progressive psytrance and techtrance (already covered in this thread) with a few stragglers here and there. One cool album that might not have been mentioned is Electrypnose's Funked Up, but that's only available commercially. Here's a free album by Sephira that you might find interesting:

Project Sketch might also have an appeal:
