Ouch. The Muslim world this past week observed Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. The 10th day of Muharram is Ashura, when Shi'ite Muslims mourn the death of the grandson of the Prophent Mohammed. Very devout Shi'ites cut and whip themselves into a bloody froth in observance. if this was done for a religious purpose to show servitude or something rather towards the one they worship, then wouldn't they do it in the privacy of their own home? it would seem as though they are trying to out do each other which would take away from it's original purpose..
