Our political campaign laws actually require that candidates say that. Forcing them to "stand by" the words in their ads is supposed to discourage them from making really nasty attack spots.

It's political suicide, and everybody in his camp must have known that. Yeah, I suppose he was fading and needed something severe to try to jolt him back into the race, but if we're looking ahead to November already, then it's lights out. This sort of thing is the easiest way to alienate any moderates.
