He lurks but doesn't really post, but I did speak with him briefly last weekend.

I have a group of friends over there now. I will get the info from them and post it up

Can everyone chill with the PM's and post publicly por favor? Muchos gracias!

I am going to Thailand next year and would like to hear opinions on if its a "must-see" or a "stay-away."

I have heard the full range of "Its the most epic party ever" to "holy crap please avoid, too many drugs and nonsense."

Also, I asked Party Hopper, and he gave good info and gave some positive feedback!

Advice from Dan (since I am sure he wouldnt mind passing on travel info):

"Yes, I've been there twice, most recently 2 years ago. Hopefully you can catch the full moon party (on Koh Phangan) while there. Places to stay there are not surprisingly more expensive during that time, and you should book that well in advance. I've heard that you might be able to get better prices if you just go and ask for available rooms in person, if you want to take that chance. Here's one the many links with info - http://www.fullmoon.phangan.info/

I've also been to Bangkok, Koh Samui (where you most likely need to go, to get to Koh Phangan), and Phuket.

Also, during the Full Moon Party period, many of the places on Koh Pha-ngan (mostly resorts consisting of bungalows) require a minimum 3-5 night stay.

Also possible places to visit (though I haven't gone) are Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Koh Phi Phi.

In Phuket, the main party area is Patong Beach. The main strip for clubs and bars is Bangla Road.

Koh Samui is kinda overpriced, and feels the least Thai and most touristy (at least among the places I went to). The most interesting thing I saw there was a mummified monk. They main place for nightlife is Chaweng Beach. There are Irish bars here and at the other places.

On the islands (especially in Koh Phangan), the most economical way to travel are on what look like modified pick-up trucks. The main beach is Had Rin, where the Full Moon Party takes place. The party goes from 9 PM to about 10 AM, and there is an afterparty at a club nearby. Expect everything to be more expensive during the party (such as using a bathroom). On the island, there are booklets you can pick up, which tell you where all the parties are, and give some more advice.

At some places, they might ask to keep your passport while you stay there, which does prevent you from losing it while drunk or on drugs. They probably could make a copy of the main page for you, or you could make one yourself - in any case, bring that around with you.

In the tourist areas, most people know at least some English. Though not necessary, it helps to know how to say "Hello" and "Thank you" - there are slight differences in how men and women say them.
Expect to be hounded with calls of "massage" (which you should try at least once), "tuk tuk" (which is a ripoff that you should avoid if possible) and (for Yuis) suits by tailor shops. You can and should bargain at souvenir shops. If you are invited to go somewhere to see a "special offer" for jewelry (or stuff like that), that is a scam, and you could be physically threatened.

I've heard about scams at the duty free shops in the Bangkok Airport, so I would avoid those.

I found a Lonely Planet guidebook to be very helpful, especially in telling about other scams to look out for."

Sorry that I haven't been on TA much, and didn't see this earlier.
Here now, after Kelly mentioned this to me on fb.
I don't think I can say much more than what I told her (and what she posted). But go ahead and ask, and I'll likely think of more things.

There is a place on the north end of Had Rin beach that supposedly makes good milkshakes, with mushrooms having something to do with it.

Also, they love psytrance. Expect to hear that, house music, and more mainstream tunes. I didn't hear any of the kind of trance that we know and love.

I've seen some people write that they enjoy the nights leading up to the party more than the party itself. Maybe it has something to do with the excitement building up, but the places aren't too crowded yet.

I think guys need to be more on the lookout for lady-boys, lol.

Here are my pics from there:

Now, does anyone have any tips for Carnival in Rio de Janeiro?

Posted by auteuil on Dec-29-2011 12:01:

I can recommend Rainbow Bungalows. About 15 mins tuktuk ride to Had Rin Beach. Very reasonable price if you book in advance. Don't expect to find something cheap if you haven't booked anything before arrival (during full moon parties, that is).

And YES, that place on the north end of the beach that partyhopper mentioned. Don't miss out, it's a must.

it is unlike anything anywhere else in the world. it is an absolute must if you make to the south of the country.

there's actually very few people doing drugs, definitely under 10%. this is my 5th full moon party and yes you will see some drugged out people here and there but the vast majority is just alcohol. i've heard so many people pass on stories theyve heard from their friends who went to full moons about how everyone was on drugs. they either don't know what someone on drugs acts like or they get caught up in trying to talk up how crazy it is. and trust me it's beyond crazy, no drugs needed

it's just a giant raging beach party which on the night of the full moon gets 10 to 20,000 people depending on which time of year you go. the nights leading up to the full moon can sometimes be more fun depending again on time of year but they will get at least 2-3000 people.

more specific questions would be better.

you must stay in haad rin....sunset beach in the quieter side and about a 5-10 minute walk to the main party beach, sunrise beach is the party and best place to stay if you want convenience but don't plan on sleeping too much if staying on sunrise beach as you will hear pounding bass in your all night from the beach

plan to be in koh phangan for at least 3 days, the 2 nights leading up to and the night of the full moon. there's still a decent party going the 2 nights after but i'd say the first 3 are the best

mushroom mountain and it is legal here

Thanks for the solid advice!

I am going with a group that can stomach the site of a small amount of drug use, but I can assure you that if there are 20,000 zombies and sketch bags, then would not be very pleased We are a good group, though, and we can pretty much have fun in any circumstance as long as its safe

We are going on a 16-ish day trip to (mostly) southern Thailand and Bangkok, and of course we are definitely considering this. Thanks for the info on going a few days before. We are essentially planning the trip around the Full Moon Party (for obvious reasons). Because we are travelling to several different places/regions, its good to know which days are the best to hit it it. I think we only plan on going for 4 days to Koh Phangan, so this is good info!

Damn girl, I wish we were all going together- what fun that would be!

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I was seriously thinking about skipping the full moon party, but now I'm thinking twice.

I see there are many dates avail for 2012, what is the best time of year to go? Are all the parties the same just at diff times during year?, or is one bigger or better than others?

It bascially revolves around the wet/dry season. I know the low season is september-november because it's during the monsoon. I've been for an october one and it is noticeably smaller than other times of the year but still pretty incredible, probably 50% of the crowd compared to high season. Mid-high season is june-august i think, high season is december-february, and march-may is considered mid-season. If you look at any hotel websites for koh phangan they usually have this listed as they charge more or less depending on the time of year.

I've noticed a little bit different of a crowd during different times. In July was a pretty young crowd and October was more of an older crowd(20-30 versus 18-25) and there was alot more diversity in the crowd, tons of south americans and canadiens. Right now it's all british, aussies, and israelis. Could be just a coincidence, just passing along my experience

The best time is for sure new years, this is my first time here during this time but it has been a really good party every night since christmas and is just getting bigger as the days go on

you'll be fine. there's plenty of sketch bags and zombies but many more who just want to party and dance til the sun comes up. it's definitely safe if you can stay in control of yourself or have some friends around if you get a little too drunk, which is pretty much the story everywhere anyway. you won't see any police around but i've never seen anything even close to a fight here

if you are going during high season try to book your hotel at least a month before, the good ones get sold out well in advance

My opinion is that if you can go to the party, you should.
I think it's cool to be able to dance on a beach all night.
Getting massages after dancing is nice too (which you can do in other places in Thailand too).
Because of the minimum stay requirement, you do need to make sure you have enough days in your schedule for it. I would recommend staying until at least 2 days after, so you can do the afterparty (climbing up the hill to get to the Backyard Club after dancing all night is fun, lol), and rest and recover.
While there, you could also try elephant riding and/or the Snoop Dogg Boat Tour around the island.

An alternative to staying in Koh Phangan is to stay in Koh Samui, Ko Tao, or Surat Thani, and take a ferry there just for the party. That will be a longer trip to and from the party, and I've heard lines for that get quite long. You're at the mercy of the ferry schedule, and if you miss one, you might have to wait a few hours for the next one.

For the flights to and from Koh Samui, book on the web site for Bangkok Airways or Thai Airways. It's cheaper than the fares listed on Kayak and other US-based travel sites. At least it was for me.

I saw and met many Europeans and Aussies in Thailand - maybe there are some TA's from there who have gone or are going.
