2012 The year of the resurgence of the pure form of Trance by JOOF

JOOF posted this several hours ago what do you guys think?

Posted by caddyshack on Jan-17-2012 01:17:

None genre seems to be the new trend now, along with Trouse as they abandon ship. So how does that make us true Trance musicians feel? The ones that have dedicated our lives to this genre we feel so passionate about. Angry? Bitter? I think relived is the right word.

I can only hope he is right.

BTW big props for J00F to stand for the music he enjoys most

Whether you like his music or not those are the words of a proper musician

j00f speaks the truth. a few years back when corporate trance djs dominated, they were all waving the trance flag, but now its fallen out of favor (ie. guetta house has taken over) they are suddenly proclamining themselves "genre free". makes me sick how spineless they are. theyve prostituted the genre and left it to die.

guess thats where true trance djs and producers like j00f, airwave & christopher lawrence come in but I feel bad for them having to rebuild a scene thats in shreds right now.

Well, these are precisely I need now.

I support his efforts but I also think that the changes we are seeing with Trance are also a direct result of what the new EDM fans want to hear -- many don't have the patience to be taken on a journey with their music....

I posted this on his fb:

It is VERY difficult these days to find any 'Trance' sets that take you on a journey. Longer sets are a rarity, many new partiers tend to lack patience... they don't want a 5-hour "journey"... they want to hear the 'bangers' and go home.

...Prior to the Internet/Youtube a producer only really became recognized (by name) when popular DJs were playing their tracks -- now things have evolved to the point that producers have to brand themselves from the start. Also, it seems the new EDM fans today focus less on whether someone is a good "DJ" and more on what popular productions they are associated with.

As well, too many 'Trance' DJs are playing the SAME tracks -- years ago it was more about having a distinct sound... I guess part of the "journey" discussion -- now, with smaller sets, DJs(/producers) just want to play/promote their own productions(or those of their label) leaving less diversity/experimentation in sets. I used to enjoy it when the more popular DJs went outside their main genre and incorporated some Techno/Breaks/etc. in their sets.... now many play it safe... or play a random dubstep tune that does NOT flow at all.

Nine years ago we were also directly involved with bringing these lesser known sounds to audiences, bringing the likes of J00f (http://bit.ly/yxwQOl), Orkidea, Johan Gielen, Dumonde, and others to Toronto because back then only the Armin/Ferrys/PVDs were getting any attention. We also did our part with Livesets and singles of tracks that we thought should have had more exposure... the caveat being that, back in those times, anyone associated with MP3 was "evil" and we had our fair share of headaches as a result. So, it's surprising to see, even today, how some torrent sites are openly distributing music (that is available for sale) and readily accept 'donations' for their 'efforts'. Boggles my mind.

Agree with you on the hate part, way too many genre-whores these days who trash other forms of EDM yet expect their own to be respected. Sure, the odd jab here and there is ok but as others have ranted about in the past some Trancers take it WAY too far.

We do what we can, the past two winners of our DJ contest - DJ Apsara / RoryJames - had sets (http://bit.ly/yeTMJi) that were not your typical 'Trance'. As a result, this pissed off some people - who emailed us saying we were not being 'true' to 'Trance' (i.e. not enough 'cheesy'/commercial tunes). Unreal.

While it's clear Trance is going through a transition phase this is not necessarily a bad thing (considering the past few years).

Ah it's J00F time again.

Seriously though, it's starting to get more and more tiring with every rant and i'm still confused as hell about these following standpoints:

- What makes his sound 'true trance'. On what grounds are you even supposed to claim something like that?
- How is his position any different from all the others thousands of good producers who are unable to attract attention because their music doesn't follow certain trends?

From what i can see they were just in a luxury position back in the nineties and now their music's abstract and druggy nature is starting
to catch up with them. They're already doing far better then anything i would have expected from listening to their music.

I'm still sympathetic to his cause, but this is just getting stupid now.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-17-2012 19:24:

I wish J00F would let someone else look over these articles and give him some editorial advice, because the good and constructive things he has to say are often undermined by these unnecessary sticking points. I really would not call this article a "rant" as such, because it's actually very positive in tone. The real point here should be that 2011 was a very good year for trance and 2012 promises to be even better, in no small part because of J00F's work in promoting and supporting the music he believes in. But he spends more time taking issue with the negative side of the industry and making purist divisions, so this will once again be labelled as a rant and dismissed out of hand by people he's trying to communicate with.

Posted by enydo on Jan-17-2012 19:31:

People care far too much about genre labels.

Posted by Adam420 on Jan-17-2012 19:35:

well genre equals marketing which equals money

I think it's more from a business standpoint

Posted by Woony on Jan-17-2012 19:38:

I think Trance is on the way to get into a very good situation musically. It's still far removed from hipsterdom and hype (calling something 'Trance' on RA is seen as an insult) and it's starting to remove itself from the commercialism that has plagued Trance for so long, as more and more casual listeners are instead drawn to Dubstep and Electro-House, which will eventually take over the spot of Trance.

People like to label things. People like to say 'I listen to genre X!' and not some awkward explaination of what the music sounds like. I think it's not really about money but more about basic human nature. New stupid genres and genre terms will always be invented, because people want them.

Posted by Adam420 on Jan-17-2012 19:45:

And how are you going to sell something if you can't label it properly?

Posted by Woony on Jan-17-2012 19:50:

By the way, I wonder what these HUGE names are he is speaking off. I don't think any of the Trance jocks that have been around for a very long time actually stands behind the music he produces/plays these days.

I feel it is possible to define what "true" trance is (as opposed to whatever is simply labelled as "trance", the style of music). It all comes down to function: is the music made for the moment or is it made for an eternity? Plenty of "trance" is simply pop music; the distinction I'd make is between music of immediate gratification and music of depth and spirit. Where anyone else draws the line is a matter of personal opinion... and whether J00F has any right to claim the mantle of "true trance" is not for me to say... but for me this is what constitutes grounds to make such a claim.

Good points!

As for myself, I am doing my part to keep the genre from becoming stale and homogeneous, and I remain committed to the concept of the set as a journey.

j00f def has a great vision as for the worst of the storm being behind us now, i def feel it's at the same level it has been for the past few months...not much improvement
-labels still putting out crap
-dj's just playing hits
-everyone jumping on the trouse and mash-up bandwagon
etc etc

i really liked that blog from airwave, iam very happy to see he is on board as far as how he see's how much the scene has changed
iam really looking foward to his new album, some of the samples he posted are pretty sweet also that track trinidad flashback...WOW deep emotional proper prog trance

hopefully these guy's will continue to put out great music and inspire other producer's and dj's to help make the scene it once was

I live in London, ten years ago the city was packed with underground Trance nights, I could go clubbing from Friday all the way to Monday none stop. I used to see Flemming every Sunday at Sunnyside up.
There's hardly anything here now. Lucky to get a good Trance night once a month. Ministry of sound is a joke.

Flemming added another comment that answers most of your questions here:

Hi Everyone, many thanks for your huge response, we'll get back to all the emails ASAP. I don't want to turn this into a hate campaign, it's not. As with specialist cars, bikes, boats etc, they have clubs for likewise enthusiasts to be able chat and find information on their hobby/passion. As things stand we don't have that.

It's impossible to cover all angles with blogs. I'm not trying to split Trance in two, I'm not hating other DJ's around me, I'm actually super close friends with A&B, Armin etc. It would be stupid to dislike any person because they don't like the same music, so its not a hate campaign and you can quash that one. It's simply a 'club' for likeminded Trance lovers. Naturally some people wont understand or get it, I don't expect them too. I'm looking to attract the people who do get it.

I'm no leader. My style of Trance isn't the bible and should never be. I'm not looking to bring the great sound of 2000 back, that should be left as part of history. I get a hit from finding new groundbreaking music to play in my sets, unfortunately that pot is very small, it's getting ever increasingly difficult to find good quality music. Hopefully this idea will uncover some gems of tracks, producers and DJ's. These are the people who will lead the specialist scene forward, not me, I'm just a DJ who plays their music.

I like what J00f is saying, he has a point, and hes one of the few out there with a fucking backbone.

I think that the DJs/Producers need to stop giving a fuck about the "new generation" and their short attention span, yeah they're the new audience(among the rest more experienced) but who are they to guide change in the scene when they know nothing about it or its history and where it is going, i feel like our Scene has been diluted and derailed and it keeps straying off because every one is trying to "please the crowd, and new masses". Do what you gotta do, be true to the music and the ones that are worthy will stay.

The scene shouldn't change for the newcomers, the newcomers need to change to enter the scene, if it is the scene they love. These days i don't see anybody research, look deeper into the music, they just follow the big names and only take what they're fed in sets that are out there whoring the same old tracks.

Posted by sljiva on Jan-17-2012 22:32:

I like how the guy's speaking of resurrecting trance by means of experimentation and some next-level production wizardry like he's forgetting what kind of limited, not to mention exhausted, niche style he's talking about the whole time. I'm really interested to see how the fuck will he and his friends reinvent the genre and push the boundaries now the evil commercial producers that obstructed them the whole time are gone. Shorten the breakdowns and make thicker basslines? And why the hell is he talking and not doing shit?

Sorry for the lack of enthusiasm, but the best you can do here is bring back some of the less demanding audience who felt appalled with current state of this music and turned to tech house or something. Present (and future) of electronic music is certainly not in trance or any other specific genre for that matter. People who want something exciting and fresh these days are looking the other way where producers of all kinds of different backgrounds and intentions have crushed down all the barriers and limitations, and are now making all of their wildest ideas come true.

He has done plenty. He has resurrected Platipus Records behind the scenes, he has got names like Airwave producing again, and DJing far better than they used to, he has supported unknown DJs and he has pushed the J00F Editions clubnight worldwide, booking talented local supports and demonstrating to promoters worldwide how a well-programmed club night with less DJs and more emphasis on musical journey can be very successful and make money. Not to mention signing, playing and supporting a lot of good music that wouldn't get any attention without a name of his size behind it.

This is my point - this guy has done more than anyone else in the scene to put his money where his mouth is, but that gets completely overlooked because he keeps repeating the same rants we're all over-familiar with, and keeps talking about "pure trance" and musical experimentation, which invites criticisms of purism and ill-founded elitism.

I'm not really a big fan of some of the newer things on john's label and have moved on from trance a lot to the point where I don't listen to much of it (new) these days but there's one guy who posts on here too who puts up amazing sets which imho are 'pure' trance, Jon Cockle. Listening to his Entropy V set over & over, it's just perfect for what in my opinion trance 'is'

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-18-2012 10:07:

Jon absolutely canes J00F Records...

Posted by Ian on Jan-18-2012 10:36:

Which is proof that sometimes you need to hear tracks in a set to appreciate them properly. It's not that I don't like them but a 2-3 years ago, I'd listen to a track singularly and love it and then look at putting it into a set. Now it's hearing things in a set sometimes at different tempos or whatever that can draw me in.
