Goodbye Megaupload!

The Department of Justice announced Thursday that it has conducted a major action to shut down MegaUpload, a popular file-sharing site widely used for free downloads of movies and television shows.

Justice Department indictment of MegaUpload After receiving indictments from a grand jury in Virginia for racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and other charges on Jan. 5, federal authorities on Thursday arrested four people and executed more than 20 search warrants in the U.S. and eight foreign countries, seizing 18 domain names and an estimated $50 million in assets, including servers run in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

MegaUpload is a "digital locker" that allows users to store files that can then be streamed or downloaded by others. Its subsidiary site MegaVideo became very popular for the unauthorized downloads of movies and TV shows. Users whose uploaded content proved particularly popular were paid for their participation.

Kimble was a millionaire, I met him in 06 during the last leg of the gumball race.

We had a pit stop in Vegas, he bought EVERYONE drinks that night. He blew easily a few hundred thousand that night, so you can only image how rich that guy really was.

He tried to buy a house cash for 30 million in New Zealand, but got shut down because he had a "record."

Donated MILLIONS to New Zealand for all kinds of things including fireworks.

I don't think many people know how really rich he was...

A friend of mine who was in the Gumball told me a story about a friend of his from Dubai who bought a Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe JUST to use in the Gumball and then stick in a garage in LA to almost never be driven again.

Apparently this guy's dream was to be a "Hollywood star".

Even people who have everything still want SOMETHING.

The timing on this is pretty hilarious given all the anti SOPA protesting this week. They're trying to make the case that they need additional legal tools to shut down "rogue websites", but they were able to take down Megaupload just fine anyway. Seems to undermine their position just a bit...

not be pedantic or anything, but this investigation has been going on for 2+years, and they probably had court orders to seize the property and shut it down (in all of the countries).

They certainly could have waited a few days for the SOPA vote date to pass, so I would not be surprised if the timing was political in nature. I mean, if anything it's just going to piss off people even more to show even more support against the bill, so I don't really know why they didn't just wait. Who the fuck knows how the government does things these days anyways...

Err, my point is, if it was politically motivated to be the date it was, it seems like it will have the opposite effect. The amount of people reached by the reddit/wiki blackday is incredible.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. I think it runs counter to their overall message that they're powerless to stop international pirates. Obviously they had to do some work to get court orders and make it legitimate, etc, but they still managed to pull it off under our current laws. It really forces the question of whether new laws are actually necessary, and doing it at a time when everyone and their mom is talking about SOPA already seems pretty boneheaded.

megaupload is back now, but they are under an IP and no domain. I don't know the IP, but did see it posted somewhere else

I also just realized i had several GB of saved files (non-copyrighted) on my megaupload account. thanks a lot US government! never cease to disappoint
