Idea

you should try to open it in mediaplayer of realplayer
with those 2 programs you can open most of the music/image/movie-files

when i open it with Realplayer i get this message

MPEG by Bitcasting: File Format cannot find MPEG file header. This may not be an MPEG file.

But thats bullshit because by all my other friends the movie works perfectly.Maybe there is something wrong with the registry or something!!Reallty dont know.

open your windows media player.
open 'my computer' and go to the mpeg folder on your vcd
then click and drag one the .dat files right into the windows media window and it should play

Ever tried to rename the file to MPG or mpeg!!??

Posted by Mark on Apr-12-2001 22:18:

no that doesn't make a difference
it only changes the file extension but
the content is the exact same.

Media Player should be able to play .dat files because really they are just MPEG-1 files. Try downloading the older version Media Player 6.4. Version 7 has given me nothing but problems.

Wink a couple programs

Just a couple suggestions for certain player for dat files, being into that type of vcd deal I use a couple of good programs out there that have each of their own advantages once you start to play around with 'em a while. Ok, the two I use are:

Cinematograph (awesome player that can play SVCD's as well)
PowerDVD (one of the most powerful and versatile programs that can play pretty much anything including dat files and svcds too)

Just as a side note, Cinematograph is unregistered software but if you want to be cheap and not buy there, I'm sure they're cracks for it at your local crack site. :P Hope this helps at all!
