damn dude, toronto is a great place to be lovin trance! great scene there.
i don't know all the record shops (i'm sure there are many), but i use http://www.release-records.com which is out of toronto, and they have a ton of upfront vinyl. lots of trance, progressive, house, techno.
vinyls range from $10 to $20 CND. expensive, yes. but once you hear the sound quality, you'll be hooked.
your old turntable should work just fine. you may want to get a new cartridge and/or needle, which you can pick up at radio shack. but if you haven't used it much, it should be fine, even if it's old.
once you start buying vinyls, you wont' be able to stop.

RELEASE RECORDS, right on young st. go there, look behind the counter on the right hand side, and pick up the whole wall. then bring them over to a 1200 and give them some listens, and buy what you like.
also check out the best sellers wall they have, got a few classics.

This is all soooooo true
