No more of this introduce a new thing every 8 bars

It's either introduce 2 new things every 8 bars, or introduce something every 4 bar...

or else you're dead to me.

What if I pretty much keep it the same for 32 bars, only introducing non-incremental tweaks to build tension and then land a metric-fuck-ton of change to kick in a mean groove that has all the head-shakers rolling their eyes into the back of their skulls and breaking their molars as they bounce their heads on their knees?

Is that enough?

yo've just doubled your work.

But, then DJs would have to learn to beat-match in half the time. We can't have that. Our job is to make them look as good as possible while they pretend like they're actually doing something (cough...Guetta).

You also double the awesomeness. Paradox.

Where am I suppose to hear this?

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Feb-16-2012 01:19:

one thing producers need to start doing is making their intros interesting enough for a non dj to listen to. You need some sort of element right from the start that will make people keep listening.

I don't really know. I'm just whoring out the song. It kind of does what I suggested earlier, but still relies on a few 8 bar changes to affect that.

The intro has changes every 4 bars. It makes it little more akin to a pop production.

Some old school trance tracks would introduce with a chord progression. DJs would obviously not mix in from that point, but if you were listening to the entire thing on an ipod, the pads or whatever would make the song more patellable.

I'm with you on that. I can't stand the percussion intro for 60+ seconds. Every time I show a track to somebody they get annoyed right from the get go since nothing happens. I don't even enjoy listening to full tracks anymore for the same reason. There is no way people will get the exposure they want if they keep doing this.

this is why i love the first crystal method album

That is because the tracks you are listening to are meant to be mixed in a DJ set. it is laughable that you think people will not get exposure just because of an intro, there is much more to it mate.

More melodic / interesting intros used to be more common I think:

i am experimenting with this always, always keeping in mind the 4/4 signature but it really feels awkward if you add things at 4 bars. About intros, they suck the radio edits are totally understandable unless you've an iphone or an mp3 that gives you the possibility to quickly skip. There are intros and intros though some songs are interesting from the very beginning, i particuarly hate for djing that intros that start without a 4/4 hit or simply without a kick.

How about we just stop focusing on templates, structures and rules altogether, and remember that we should be writing original songs that we can do whatever the hell we want with.

It's funny when people try to revolt against rules they don't understand.

Posted by Vector A on Feb-16-2012 17:34:

I dunno, the rule "introduce a new thing every eight bars" is pretty easy to understand.

Is that what I'm doing? not sure how that pertained to what I said

Posted by Rodri Santos on Feb-16-2012 18:23:

Avicii's intros & outros suck mountains. The structure of a track is one of the hardest parts to change i think, big changes would sound strange for most people.

Posted by Richard Butler on Feb-16-2012 18:30:

I tried adding interst from the off and more than once a label said they would only take the track if I added a dj freindly intro.

I'm all for tracks with interest from the off.

Some tracks will lend themselves to new things added every 4 bars to, but other tracks I think would sound cluttered and hectic with such a structure.

I actually completely agree with you here.

One of the tracks that is possibly worth listening in it's entire duration is Lost Tribe - Gamemaster
