Vienna Ensemble PRO 5
Hi all,
Not sure about this product so please forgive my ignorance If I made some false assumptions:
I use Reaper 4, Zeta 2, Jupiter 8V, Magnus Choir and the standard comps and EQs on a AMD PhenomII quad/8 GB ram.
I am running into a problem with Zeta/J8. Both are CPU hungry on multi-osc string type patches and I'm redlining some cores/not others. The multiprocessor distribution seems to suck. This is with 1-2 instances of the J8 (one doing bass, one dual layer String) and 5 of Z3ta doing Strings/Supersaw/Brass and general plucky stuff. Magnus is one track. Not even a drum machine vst/samples.
The choke occurs BEFORE Reverb or delay, and applying any immediately takes things to a screeching halt. Arturia is soon to upgrade the J8 to 64 bit but that will only lessen, not 'solve' my problem, which seems to be needing more brute force horsepower.
Should I consider VEP with a similar/greater box to split the load or would one high end I7 be the wiser choice? I hear/read that the Intel is way more powerful and that people basically can't choke it without total overkill, then again, a distributed load is never a bad thing.
Advice?
I have VEP, but I use it as a subhost to Pro Tools for 64-bit plugins (i.e., on the same computer) and I haven't run it across a network with a slave computer, so I can't say for sure. But, I've heard that there can be some noticeable and annoying latency when running across a network. I'm pretty sure that L4C and probably DJ RANN have used it in that capacity, so they can probably offer better advice. That said, those synths shouldn't be choking a modern CPU, so I would thinking that updating your computer would be a better option.
BTW, I'm not familiar with Magnus Choir - is it sample-based?
