Looking for low budget deck...

I've just bought my first vinyls...

* Gouryella - Walhalla (Original Mix + AvB Rising Star Mix)
* Veracocha - Veracocha (Original Mix + Origin Mix)
* Kai Tracid - Life Is Too Short (Thomas P. Heckmann RMX + RMB RMX)

...and I need a turntable/deck to play them on.
I have found a deck that is fairly cheap: Stanton STR8-30 (2.795kr or approx 372 US$) more info here

I'm a noobie to vinyls/decks, so I don't know what features i need. For example, do I need Direct Drive or Belt Drive??

My plan is to buy 1 TT that I can hook up to my stereo. Then buy more records and eventually more DJ hardware. So is this TT a good choice or do u recommend other decks?

I find it very hard to believe taht youre a senior trance addict, have bought several vinyls, and dont know whether or not to get belt/direct drive TTs. And i find it very hard to believe that the Str-30 is $372 USD. I think it might be a typo or you looked at the wrong turntable because the highest Stanton turntable goes for no more than $300 USD.

But since you are a newbooie, maybe look into getting a citronic turntable. Not sure what model exactly, but Ive read good reviews on it and dont even mess with belt driven turntables. I suggest you spend some time reading the many past threads on this matter.

Good luck!

If you just want a record player to listen to vinyls, the get whatever is cheapest kenwood, sony, whatever, i see them in the stores for $100. belt driven is OK for this.

if you want to DJ with your records, you will want 2 technics 1200SLs, either MK2s, or M3Ds.

thats my opinion anyway

I live in Norway so the TT's they got in the stores here are imported and costs more than usual. I used an online currency calc, so the US$ price might be incorrect.

well if you eventually plan on doing some djing you want to get some decent tables. you can never go wrong with getting a technics and id totaly recomend that if you have the money and are seriously considering djing later on. if not, stanton has some decent cheap TT's. the str8-100 is the best model they make (in my opinion) and here it costs $300. you could also pick up the str8-60's which aren't too bad of a table for their price which are $159.
I got all these prices of a retailer on the net (www.123dj.com). shipping would be pretty pricey to norway. so i dont know. I'd look into finding an internet retailer close to where you live and order from them.
good luck.

if I were you, I'd look for a good cheap used deck... just something to start with. ask around your area, see if someone local is looking to part with one. get whatever is the best value. whatever you get will be fairly inadequate for DJ'ing, but would work for just playing records... as far as mixing goes, technics or vestax is the way to go. you could upgrade later.

the str8-30 is really new... and they only cost $130 here in the states according to a quick search of the net (cheap decks!) .. but they look pretty cool. for the money, stantons are not that bad.

the str8-30 is stanton's low end model - it's new, aimed towards people starting out or just looking for something to play records.

good luck

I've searched the web and I've found a few alternatives:

01.
NUMARK TT1510 - The cheapest TT they've got at HS Records. Info here
02.
DENON DP29F - This is a Hi-Fi recordplayer. Info here (NB: Text in Norwegian. U can look at the pic though )

What I want to do is to buy one deck, then buy a second deck. For example: 1x Stanton STR8-30, then later, when I've got the $$$ I'll buy another Stanton STR8-30. Then finally I'll buy a mixer.

What do ya think I should do??

ok.. the numark. forget it! hella crappy deck IMHO. dunno anything about the denon, but denon's CD deck rep is really good.

if I were you, and just wanted basic decks, id get the w str8-30's and a mixer... maybe a behringer VMX series mixer? they are cheap and i keep hearing they are decent.

well.. its got the tables you want. the mixer i'm not familiar with, but my personal experience with stanton (the RM3S) was quite poor. that mixer is definitly very basic, but is priced right for what it is ($65 online in the USA) .. Although I didn't really like my RM3S, it did teach me alot. if I was to do it all over again, i'd probably have chose something else. exactly what, leaves me at somewhat of a loss. thre smx-201 does have an advantage of being simple, not all cheesy, and inexpensive.

in the world of inexpensive mixers, it's really a battle of the less of the evils...

I mentioned behringer, because i know they are inexpensive and i've used some quite decent behringer products (thier audio processing stuff, and one of thier small eurorack mixing boards) - they just came out with the VMX line of mixers that seems pretty cool, a bit cheesy but supposibly decent.. search the DJ forum, there's a long post with some good info on the behringer mixers.

as far as headphones, these are really important - it helps to be able to hear well. i'd opt for a set of sony mdr-v6s (not V600's though), mdr-7506 (same as the v6, diff package), or sanheiser's (280 pro's are quite popular). I use MDR-V700's myself, they work well.. but the V6/7506's are less expensive, more durable, and supposibly sound better. see the headphone thread also here in the DJ forum.

packages can sometimes be cool... but you should shop around for the best deals on individual components and make sure your really getting a savings... packages can make good references for various setup's, too. definitly good to look over since you're learning about all this.

Yeah, It's a shame shipping is so expensive

Posted by MERiDiAN5i2 on Sep-01-2002 19:17:

europeans pay high shipping on US equiptment
we pay high shipping on your euro records! (but it's still alot of the times cheaper to buy them from there)

haha.. off topic, i know, but i had to say it

A little more off topic here

This must be the ultimate DJ setup:

Decks: 2x Technics SL1210 M3D
Mixer: 1x Stanton VRM-10
H.phones: 1x Sony MDR-V700DJ

Click the names to see pic...

I dont think I wholly agree with that statement. Yes The Technics 1210's are pretty much the best deck, but I don't think when it comes down to it, even that expensive Stanton mixer can match a top end Rane or Allen & Heath, + u forgot the Ortofon DJ Concordes/Nightclubs stylii

P.S read the headfones thread... MDR-V700DJ = & HD280 Pro and Sony V6 = (they whip its ass, )

If u have seen the video from DJ Tisto's performance at Dutch Dimension [02.02.2002]. U can see that he used the Stanton VRM-10 mixer.

Pioneer SEDJ5000s > *

Posted by spectra on Sep-02-2002 19:57:

heh

I havent seen the video, hmm well it could be a beast, I dont think DJs get paid to use Mixers like they do headfones

If someone has used this mixer and can compare it to the others tho... would be good.

I'll check them out Liquid,

replace that stanton box with any of the a&h xone's and you would be correct The VRM10 is pretty nice though, but i've never used one. I dont think i'd chunk down almost 2 grand for anything from stanton

i'm still not sure why people bash the V700DJs so heavily on this board - maybe they are just not well suited to dolphin trance or omething.

Posted by spectra on Sep-05-2002 00:02:

dolphin trance?!?

No its just the fact of the matter is that the V700DJs suck ass.
