Windows 8
Anyone here excited for it? Looks every interesting to use since they switched up the whole user interface. While some things may be similar it's a big jump from Windows 7. And also since Windows 7 had to fix all the problems from Windows Vista... I was just getting used to it, now the flipped the bitch all over again. There are a few things it seems they need to fix as in user interaction, finding buttons etc but it also looks like it moves very smoothly. There's a video on engadget that shows W8 on an 82" screen that resembles Minority Report. Pretty awesome!
Tablets will become a big part in home integration, as you can see the whole METRO interface is continued throughout Windows mobile, tablets, 8 and Xbox Live.
I love their new custom font, thank god they didn't resort to Helvetica...
They have also removed the 'Start' button... or placed it elsewhere.
Windows 8 Consumer Preview
'Charms' aka widgets / icons (located on the far right of the menu)

Its mostly cosmetic changes.
The usual security tweaks have been made, as well as advanced power saving features.
There is a quick start up feature that can be enabled that will make boot times much quicker. Essentially, all boot services will hibernate on RAM or the HDD instead of completely shutting off.
The kernel itself though is more or less the windows 7 kernel which was a refined version of the Vista kernel.
Most of the tweaks were made to be more receptive to the touchscreen/tablet-centric demographic that we are shifting to.

I haven't been excited for anything Microsoft since Windows 95 which imo is the last time they actually showed an attempt at innovation. The company doesn't take risks. Just does the minimum changes required to have their customers purchase a new product (not making new and old compatible of course). Prolonging the monopoly and milking their license cow are their only goals in my eyes.

Look like I'll be waiting for windows 9. It seems as if win 8 is a stepping stone to win 9; a warm up for a really big change.

| Originally posted by kaniz Could always be the hope of a jail break + os replacement to make it work. Not likely, but could happen. iPads have been hacked to run linux - so I wouldn't put it completely out of the realm of possibility. Just because Apple wouldn't support it, doesn't mean that it can't be done. |

| Originally posted by Orko Are you sure about that? Win8 now supports ARM, which makes me think that there was a lot more development. Can't wait for the ARM version to drop, and have it ported to my transformer prime. |

UI's have gotten too complicated as have the programs themselves. The average user does not need the amount of config, and options that are provided by modern operating systems. That's why I am happy to use Android for a lot if my needs. The stuff coming out MS's research lab is pretty damn cool. I held a win8 slate a couple of months ago, the Samsung hardware was really, really nice. |

| Originally posted by GGM Not trying to say they're absolutely useless for innovation, they wouldn't be alive if that was the case. I'm just saying for a company their size they don't contribute to evolution nearly as much as competitors. They're much happier buying a company with an innovative breakthrough, copying a company's innovative product, or suing them and getting a chunk of $ through their insane list of patents. Just compare their product innovation in the last 10 years to that of Google or Apple... |
