Credit Card Fraud

So to start off my Friday i check my bank account online and im thrilled to see that some useless piece of shit has charged 3 grand to my VISA at Dell.ca

So after calling the VISA fraud department im still pissed off beyond all hell and I really really want to call Dell and ask them where they shipped my new computer to...... I then want to hide in the alley beside the post office wearing a Mau5 head and jump out and pummel the first doosh i see carrying out a Dell box...

good idea? anyone had this happen to them before?

Last Monday, my mom's bank accounts were hacked, and her checking & savings accounts were both reduced to a $0 balance.

It took a few days before her bank created new accounts and restored her balances, only to have them hacked and reduced to $0 again within 24 hours!

It's been a week since then, and she's still in the process of setting up new accounts with a different bank. Hopefully she's not targeted again. WTH!?

Not my credit card but when I was visiting my brother in Vancouver I tried using my bank card to by a $1.50 ticket to ride the tram and it said insufficient funds lol. I started to sweat and when I went to the bank downtown my balance was 42 cents. Took 2 weeks before all of my money was restored. Some assholes withdrew my money at Casino Rama while I was in B.C

Another good reason to use a credit card and not a debit card as it's not your money.

I gave my brother an American Express card off my account and his wallet was stolen, they went to the jewelers across the street from his gym and spent about $5000 on stuff in there. One call to American Express and it was all taken care of.

not really fraud but someone keeps reactivating my lynda.com account and i keep getting charged $250 for the year. I call lynda tell them my account should be canceled and i want my money back. they take 10 days to return my money, on the 11th day it happens again. 4th time now, as soon as my money is returned this time im closing the freaking account. apparently lynda doesnt understand "i want this PERMANENTLY CLOSED"

ive even tried changing the password on the account but it didnt stop whoever it was from trying to get some free services at my cost.

1. Shred everything with personally identifiable info (especially financial stuff)

2. Don't use your CC/Debit card at less than reputable places (dingy ABM in a corner basement of a rural pub / gas station in middle of nowhere on a road trip / etc.)

In this day and age I don't know why people have paper trails of anything anymore. I think receipt printing should be optional (although I guess you'd need one for returns and shit...but still).

I have a bit of a conspiracy theory about this.

From asking friends who have had fraud against them, it seems certain banks tend to have WAY higher levels of fraud. Don't forget it's all insured, so the banks usually don't lose a penny, the insurance underwiters do. It seems that banks who underwrite their own insurance losses don't have anywhere near the fraud compared to those who use third parties. I'm not saying the banks are doing the fraud themselves, but I think some banks give less of shit about security and ID theft when don't lose anything.

American Express have this shot wrapped up - one phonecall and any disputed transaction is removed. Actually, I can tell you as someone who owns a business and merchant processes with Amex, they fuck you if a customer decides they don't want to pay - their entire business practice is all towards to the consumer. I had one clinet that told me she often books hotels, and if anything is even slightly sub par about her stay, she disputes the entire bill and doesn't pay a penny. I'm sure it will catch up with her at some point, and technically the hotel could and probably will sue her, but it just shows you how hardcore amex are.

Even though it's good advice to use you card in repuatble places it still won't protect you.

I have a visa that I only use very occasionally for business travel. I used it in one of London's v.expensive/top resturants and I know the management and staff are friends etc. It was the only transaction I had put on it in 6 months. Two days later, a clone of the card was used in Paris to buy a 10,000 EUR watch. Got it back as it was obvious fraud, but just because it's a reputable establishment doesn't mean shit anymore.

never had a problem, which is weird coz ive used my card at some pretty dodgy-looking online stores, especially during my vinyl obsessive days.

i definitely think you should go find and bash them colonel. i love retribution.

I think thats mostly due to the fact that Amex charges the highest transaction fee.

It's both. As a merchant, you get fucked on the % (it's usually around 4% compared to as low as 1.25% for a visa, less for a debit card) and you get fucked instantly the moment someone disputes the charge. That's why I keep all hardcopies of every transaction along with database notes for each purchase. That way I can go to small claims if they dispute on unwarranted grounds.

American Express have the most loyal customers though and traditionally a wealthier demographic. Not since they got into the credit card game though, and not since all you need for a Platinum charge card in most countries is a pulse now but oh well...

If your debit card gets cloned, is there no comeback or recompense?

It really depends on the bank and what level of account. I'm covered with my bank debit cards as long as I can show that it was not me etc, but with a lot of banks, the debit funds transaction is immediate meaning the have no way to recoup the funds once it is sent to the recipient. That's one of the reasons why getting a debit card is way easier than getting a credit card - there's little to no risk to the banks in some circumstances, both in terms of credit liability but also for misuse/fraud.

Posted by jester on Mar-04-2012 02:06:

The worst that has happened to me was someone defrauding my VISA for like $5. Someone at my school ended up cloning my card and other students cards.

As for my debit card I try and use it only when I need to (i.e at my bank). If I do use it at a shady ATM, I try and find the nearest branch of mine and change my pin.

One thing I can not stand, that my US Visa doesn't have a chip, so every day I need to check my account to make sure someone didn't clone my card

I think the worst was my dad, filling up at a gas station in Vegas. Hours later he got a call asking if he spent like $10000 in Mexico

UPDATE

I flagged the card and reported the fraud as soon as i noticed it, Its getting resolved by VISA but the process takes 4 weeks. In the meantime, i phoned DELL and tried to get some info on the transaction.

All i know is that it was Ordered to a shipping address in Markham and it was for a couple of TV's. Dell refused to give me any more info which kind of pissed me off as it was charged to my VISA.

Unfortunately it seems that the scope of my retribution will be limited to hating on anything or anyone who is from Markham Ontario..... be warned.... the hating will be furious

Posted by colonelcrisp on Mar-05-2012 16:23:

Markham is really the Nigeria of Canada..... its full of scam artists and people that no one likes.....

They dont shower, they can't drive, and they kill puppies

In addition to what others have said it's more the immediate PITA that comes with having your checking account raided. If your account is drained you're rather hosed if your mortgage is due the next day...

You bother posting a reference to an article published by the Soviet Academy of Science and you forget to post a link?

What kind of spambot are you!?
