The telenovela (and Slavoj Zizek!!!) appreciation thread

Slavoj �i�ek once mentioned how an old Brazilian telenovela (The Slave Isaura) was so popular in Slovenia during the communist era that rumours claiming the leading actress was in Ljubljana drew a crowd of thousands of fans in front of a hotel. Unfortunately, Escrava Isaura was shot long before I was born, but our telenovelas are one of the coolest things ever to come out of Brazil (and other Latin American countries, such as Mexico).

But, are you guys into telenovelas? What telenovelas do you know? What is/was popular in your country?

I find telanovela's to be absolutely hilarious, most of the time. Everything is so melodramatic and over-acted, it's great.

I hear that the ones shown in South America are boarderline X rated. Is there any truth to that?

I have to say you Brazilians have produced some good ones. Xica Da Silva was and still is one of my favorites although some of the props were cheap because of a low budget I suppose. Ta�s Ara�jo is stunning. O Clone was good as well.

Colombia and Mexico are also good producers of telenovelas. Mexico's golden age was in the 80s and 90s though. Lately all have been remakes. Venezuela comes close behind Colombia and Mexico though.

I'm a guy and am proud to say I watch telenovelas.

O Clone was quite popular around here because it had, in a really simplified way, covered some of the debates about biogenetics that were being discussed here in that time (because of Dolly, the sheep).

Colombia, really? I had no idea. Mexican novelas used to be quite popular around here, with "Maria Del Barrio", "Marimar" and "Maria Mercedez" being broadcast one after the other in one of our main TV channels. I used to find them hilarious

I have definitely watched more telenovelas than sitcoms and similar TV series in my life, that's for sure

Telenovelas were very popular around here, all the grandmas watched it. I think Esmeralda was the first one that got shown here, and people even made jokes about it ("What's green and bumps into walls?"). Natalia Oreiro was also well known and even visited Czech rep. a few times.

I thought it was all a huge pile of shit back then, but I'm sure I'd now laugh uncontrollably to parts of it if I had the courage to watch it.

Stop it Lira. The joke is overplayed now. A while ago it was quite hilarious how you pretended to have the worst possible taste regarding TV and movies. But now it has just become boring and isn't funny anymore.

Somewhere I read that Joanie loves Chachi was also broadcast in Korea and extremely popular there. The reason, however, was that Chachi is the Korean word for penis.

I'm pretty sure I later read it wasn't true, but the point really is that my anecdote is cooler than Slavoj Zizek's. How can people listen to that ridiculous accent anyway?

Actually, 차치 is the Korean word for "besides/aside". Close enough, Fleisch

Listen to what he's saying. He's marvellous: Insightful, funny, creative... and even if you disagree with the things he say and you don't find his arguments compelling, you're probably going to change the way you see the problem he's talking about.
