Music that is unpleasant or challenging to listen to
Is this totally subjective or is there some universal reason to why this tickles me the wrong way? Cool music video, but I must really concentrate to listen to it and not just turn it off. The drums in the last part of the track makes it more bearable. Is the reason that I'm not used to listening to tracks with changing tempo and strange structure? Do you like this track?
Post other examples of what -you- think fit this description.

I find this a lot easier to listen to than the track I posted. But yeah, this was what I was thinking of. I guess this track has a beat which mine for the most part don't. That probably makes it easier for me to handle.

Depends how you see, approach and experience noise really. If you see it as a disturbance, something unwanted that needs to be eliminated as soon as possible, then I guess I understand why you don't like/understand this type of music. On the other hand, I see noise as just another element of music, distinct spectrum of frequencies (actually all of them) that, if utilized correctly, can be as (or even more) effective as any other technique or sound out there. Noise can help create some really unique atmospheres and invoke certain feelings and emotions, which are otherwise almost impossible to accomplish. Physical impact of noise on your body also shouldn't be neglected.
I haven't listened to this second Emptyset album yet, though I've heard the first one and quite liked it. But I can't help the feeling that they're imitating Pan Sonic, who have explored and perfected this type of techno/industrial/noise music long time ago, and this video you posted certainly proves that. So yeah, this track is not much of a thrill, though not because of their use of noise, but because it sounds bland and it does not really explore new grounds and possibilities. This is how a great track of that style sounds like:
Constantly changing shapes and timbres of noise circulating around a static basis making beautiful contours and curves. Like a great sculpture building itself. Pure audio orgasm.
About the OP track: I can see and respect what those string stabs try to accomplish, and I really like the theme of that track, but I can't say it sounds too interesting to me. I wouldn't say it's unpleasant or challenging, just not really exciting. I share this feeling for a lot of her songs, although Bj�rk is brilliant most of the time. I still haven't properly listened to Biophilia yet, though tracks like Crystalline and Cosmogony indicate that I really should have done it by now.

Okay, do you understand how/why people can see it as unpleasant though? And yes I realize this can be said about any type of music, my point here was to discuss and figure out what exactly is it that makes it 'hard' to listen to. Is it the tempo-swings or the random notes? Do I specifically find this unpleasant because it's so far away from the music I normally listen to? Is musical taste so unique that what I find challenging to listen to in this track someone with the same musical preference as me might find enjoyable?

I would probably have had a hard time listening to this when I was 20. But now I can find enjoyment in it. There was a time when I couldn't stand a certain kind of cymbal being used in trance/house-tunes. It just made me hate the track. Somehow it passed. I'm curious to know how and why. So my musical tastes evolve and change, but why do I start enjoying *this* and not *that*? Why is the Vladislav Delay track ok for me, but not the Bj�rk-track?

Yeah, it probably has a lot to do with the fact that this song is pretty unique and probably extremely far away from what you usually listen to, but I think it has even more to do with, what psychologists call, openness to experience (that's why people with same tastes react differently to new experiences). I mean, Bj�rk is an experimental artist, and as such constantly makes art that is challenging to listen to and grasp even to her own fans. If you're not patient enough and ready to subdue your preconceptions and established viewpoints and looking for instant gratification instead, you're not gonna like it or get it. Weird signatures and tempo changes are nothing to be afraid of!

ONTOPIC: Apart from the most pop culture nonsense(nicky minaj, kid cudi, and alike), there are some tracks from the scenes and producers that I usually like, that are IMO simply unlistenable to me. Like this:
While this one sounded promising at the beginning, amazingly clich� vocals, track form, overall atmosphere make it sound like terribly cheap commercial disney movie background music. I just can't stand this track.
Also, I can not understand the people who listen to(or dj, produce) one genre only, all the time. For example, I know a guy who lives for tech house, which is, in my opinion pretty much the least creative popular genre out there. He also considers all other genres to be crap.
