Spike Witney - Time Spent on Ganymede

"I saw your eyes
And you made me cry
And for a little while
I was falling in love"

This mix was started with a concept in mind based upon my own interest in the great beyond and spacefaring in general. Jupiter's moons held a special fascination for me, so I set out to create a mixtape for such a fictional journey to (and nostalgic recall of) Ganymede, largest of Jupiter's moons. Hopefully this feeling of discovery and distant celestial bodies comes across in a small way through the course of the mix. Don a spacesuit and dream away...

By the way - and i feel like this is really dumb for me to mention - but since you like Ulrich, I have to make sure you've heard of tycho?

Yes! I love Tycho.

Used a couple of Tycho tracks in one of my other mixes -

I love chillwave, I love your Windmill Sessions mixes, I love having permalinks that aren't blocked at work... needless to say I know what I'm listening to this afternoon.

On this.

definitely going to check this out

Mate this is fantastic, definitely the best one of these that you have done. Brilliant selection of tracks, loved the flow. On some of your previous sets you fell foul of some clashing keys but you seemed to avoid pushing tracks that dont quite fit together on this. Seemed like you were happier to put tracks end to end rather than forcing a layer, and the mix is much better for it.

Alright, where to start? I'll start with this. I LOVED IT. Start to finish, easily some of the best stuff I've ever heard on TA. Light years ahead of your other chillwave mixes. It was just so.... BIG... the vastness of the mastering, coupled with the floaty melodies, beautiful vocals, lovely drums made me feel like I was in space and the reverb was turned all the way up Mixing was fantastic, flow was amazing, and the MUSIC WAS JUST SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL MAN. I know I'm going to be listening to this mix at least 30 more times until I'm just completely sick of it. This is your best work, my friend. Excellent.

Yeah this was good. Really fucking good.

Great feedback, thanks!

Had to cull quite a few tracks from this mix initially and definitely was more ruthless in outlook, which aids the quality of the flow overall. Also, take your point entirely about not trying to force tracks together that just don't go. I've been guilty of trying to prove I can mix ANY track (I'm a DJ dammit, that's what I should do...), even when they just don't go I've thought some technical wizardry would be able to layer them together. Sometimes its just better to loosen the reins to let them play out as you say.

Thanks for listening and enjoying.

Woop. That is a mightily impressive reaction, thanking you Nick.

Not a lot I can add really, love hearing that the music I share can influence and move people to the degree it does for me. That is totally what it is about.

Beautiful music all the way.

I'd be interested to see if anyone else gave this a whirl? I'm working on the next in the series currently and am knee (ear?) deep in new sounds. Lovely.

I have, I still think it's hopeless mixing music and it get's a bit samey after a while. But you've done an excellent job on record digging and the mix is affectionately passionate for it. So i'll still give it the proverbial thumbs up and hats off and the like.

This was such a great mix, very original too. Still listen to this one every so often!

Listened to this a handful of times, was a beautiful mix - very pleasant to listen to.

Also Dreams West - Shells....love it.

Danke for listening and for coming back with thoughts. What do you mean by it is hopeless mixing music though? As in this type of music or in general? Lost the love?

Very much appreciated. Was very curious to see how regular listeners the Windmill Sessions would take to these mixes as they are certainly a departure in style. Pleasantly surprised that they have seemed to translate very well on the most part and that people are prepared to give them a go.

That is totally the vibe I'm aiming for. Big grin.

Have you checked out anything else by Dreams West? If you haven't then do a Youtube search, they've got quite a few interesting tracks and videos.

I've partially addressed this on Growing Cold Together which i think was a more interesting and diverse mix from a technical standpoint, but I'll try and elaborate:

The thing with many forms of electronica and especially pop music like this is that it is structured like normal music: It gets in there, makes its point and gets out again. Honest, sensible and great for listening purposes. But when it comes to mixing the stuff it doesn't really allow for anything more adventurous then the literal act of listening to one after the other without pause. There's no layering, no building upon each other. The chemistry the tracks have with each other solely stems from them sounding mostly the same.
Because of this the resulting mix is an ongoing repetition of the same theme; It never builds up to anything, it never comes down from anywhere. And when it's over it just feels like i have listened to a bunch of songs, the mixing didn't add much to the experience. Which is a shame because you can't really hear the effort off of it that has no doubt been put in.

Regardless, an-hour-and-something's worth of great music is never a punishment to listen to. So I'm not trying to dismiss this mix on any grounds but i do like to be honest in how i feel about it. Hope you don't mind. I still love you though, so don't worry about it too much.

Yeah after hearing Shells I checked out his soundcloud and purchased his album for $5 on bandcamp, has some great tracks on it. Really like his track Nu Age which is pretty similar to shells - I'm planning on making a chillout mix shortly and throwing Nu Age in it!

I love Nu Age too, the video on Youtube is classic 80s.

Let me know when that mix hits, I'll definitely take a listen.
