Brussels

So my buddy is visiting Belgium sometime this year for some Coca-Cola work next week. Does anyone have any advice for things he should do/eat/see?

I'm jealous, I want to go across the pond soon

He should go eat in the "amadeo". The best spare ribs of Belgium and it's "eat as much as you can"

I was in Belgium for 2 weeks a few summers ago. Oddly enough, I only got a car tour from my friend and got to walk around a bit in Brussels looking for a cellphone company to get my new SIM card for my stay. I landed that day too, so I was jet lagged as I don't sleep well on planes, so I don't remember much.

I did visit the Atomium though and walked through it. That was pretty neat. That was it though, as my friends wanted to get home back to Ghent, so I only stayed in Brussels a max 3 hours. Then I had to leave as they were my ride back to Ghent and I just got off the plane

Then it was time for Gentse Feesten... oh god. If you're ever planning a trip to Belgium, I HIGHLY recommend planning it around that week in the summer. What a fucking amazing time.

In essence, I'm not a big help to this thread. Unless your buddy wants to know about the other cities in Belgium, then I can help. Lol.

Hahaha he said "hey let me know if you find out anything about Brussels" and then I asked him when he was going, so I just appended "next week" onto it, even though I had already written this year. TL;DR: I'm a moron.

Okay I'll let him know in case he ventures outside Brussels. Thanks dude!

In terms of beers, all the imported beers from Belgium we get in the States and Canada taste a whole lot different from the same beers in Belgium.

I'd still suggest trying all of their Trappist ales and beers though. The stuff you might not be able to get in Canada/US because of the fact some of them might be brewed by a monastery in some god forsaken town over there

I suggest you visit Ghent & Brugge- fav places I visited while on my backpacking trip. I promised myself I'd return there since 3 days just wasn't enough..the food, the people, the ambiance, the beer (best beer, imo)...everything about those cities left me scarred with great memories.

He should go to Bruges.

In Brussels I dunno, only been near the train station for a few hours. He might find the Belgian Comic Strip Center enjoyable? (Tintin, Astrix, The Smurfs, etc)

Yeah, but Brussels has:

is that the place with all the bookshelves? that's pretty nice. been there twice, and i've left with my face covered in caramel sauce.

also, go to Delirium for drinks. huge place with much to choose from.

Don't do Bruges alone, really, it can be daunting.
I'd recommend a trip to Antwerp, so many good breweries and pubs, and generally a better vibe than brussels in my opinion. Brussels is just yet another EU capital in that sense. Except that you can try and take a piss beside one of the boys over the fountain..

I'm not sure he has a choice, but I'll relay the message

Meanwhile, in Belgium:

For beer, hit the bar called Delerium Tremens

Over 1000 beers to choose from. It's near Grande Place, on a little side street. Sign has a pink elephant on it.

Super cool bar, and excellent beers

Jeez, I haven't been to Ghent in years. Only went for I <3 Techno though. Would've never guessed it'd be a town worth visiting.

@OP
For Brussels, maybe hit up a music/dance venue called "Nox" .

I second Bruges.

Been to England, Scotland, France, Spain, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. My favorite city I've been to in all of those countries is easily Bruges.

i remmeber there being this bar with every beer in the world. was really cool and a fun time.

Posted by ziptnf on Apr-16-2012 18:37:

Sounds like I might be travelling to Brussels myself later this year on a work trip. My buddy who just went there this past week visited Delirium said that since the drinking age is 16 in Belgium, the whole bar was filled with angsty Belgian teeny boppers, but he still had a good time. I appreciate all your suggestions!

Definitely visit this place, had a lot of fun there myself:

But if you a little leeway, buy a train pass and visit Bruges/Ghent/Antwerp. Send me a PM I have like 5 albums of pics from my trip.
