-- just got a minidisc player

Posted by Dmatrox on Sep-03-2002 19:02:

Confused just got a minidisc player

I just got one of these net md 505 minidisc players from sony

http://www.sonystyle.com/home/item....d=&itemid=28901

Ive never used minidisc players before, but i really like how small it is, however whenever i put mp3s on it, the mp3s need to be converted to ATRAC3 which takes so long when you have a 50gig mp3 collection. I couldnt put that much on a minidisc anyways.

Anyone have an MD player?

Anyone have one of those cd/mp3 players?

thoughts?

I been involved with MD since late 1998 and I have to say that today's MD recorder are MUCH better than yesterday's, in EVERY aspect! I HIGHLY suggest that you read Brian Yoan's INCREDIBLY DEATAILED reviews of Japanese MD units BEFORE you go buy something. This bloke reviews EVERY SINGLE aspect of these units! http://www.minidisc.org/ has all of his reviews. Just remember that Japanese products come out about 6 - 9 months before they hit the US so, read his review in the Autumn/Winter (Northern Hemisphere) and by Spring/Summer, those same unit (s) that he reviewed will be on store shelves. I suggest that you read these kind of things, THEN decide what's best for YOURSELF.

i have a SONY MD player. i bought the best one that was avalible @ Xmas just there. i havent really got a lot of use out of it

The real time record bit still needs to be worked on.

If u connect the MD player to ur pc and go on some of the online record stores that let u sample the whole track before u download you can just record away quality wont be so good but hey it gives u time to listen to it.

Enjoy ur new Toy

Does anyone know how to put information on an MD?

I dont know if i should return it or not. It takes too long to convert mp3s to ATRAC3's.

I wish they made these things with 1gig built in memory for information.

i bought my first md about 3 years ago then i bought a sony then i bought a sony player and then i got a sony net md recorder N1 the day it came out (jap relesase). and ali ur rite old players suck

Im going to return this MD player and get one of those CD/Mp3 players. You can put more mp3s on a CD then MD or as a regular audio CD. Plus, you dont need to convert formats like in MDs.

I also have the MZ-N1 MD recorder, which I got as soon as it came into UK shops.

ITs a great piece of kit, and I love it to bits.

The faster your comp, the faster it can convert MP3's into ATRAC 3 Format, and then the USB upload is real fast, which is alot better than real time recording.

However, this range of MD players is a desperate attempt by Sony (And other companies ) to cash in on MP3 music.

This MD is nothing compared to the iPod, which has a 10 GB HD, doesn't need conversion, and has ultra quick file transfer via the firewire connection.

This lot of players would have been excellent if they had come out b4 the current range of MP3 players, but as they came out recentlry, their introduction into the market will be very short lived.

But having said that, I have always used MD's and I just installed an MDX-M690 Active black panel Head unit in my car, so I won't be switching from MD for a long time yet!

As far as storage goes, that would be your best option. If minidisc could fix up their problems with storage without loss of quality, and have storage capacity similar to that of a mp3 cd, then it would reign supremecy. Dont buy some extravagent contraption that sets you back a small fortune, and then get a memory stick walkman in a couple of years, will be the best.

ya, i'd say the r900 is the nicest looking portable recorders

had one for a while now & say i can't imagine life without it

btw. atrac compression is better quality than lame or fraunhofer

agreed recording/transfer time sux, but one reason i got md was 'cos i didn't like carrying my cd player around...md is about 1/4 size
