I was going to say something but it wouldn't have mattered after this.

So rather than actually providing feedback on the track, you're going to complain that it doesn't fit your genre? Sorry, Progressive House was the closest genre I could think of. And on top of that, you're going to blame another group for "ruining" the genre that you "owned?" Sorry that Swedish House Mafia stole Progressive House and ruined all music. How about rather than whining about the genre as which I labeled it, how about you listen to it as MUSIC and give a critique based on that? I mean, hell, you act like I labeled it as bluegrass or something. Geez. I already know to expect a negative review now if you give feedback, just because it didn't fit in your box. Nobody likes pretentious people.

If you posted this in a folk music forum, and labelled it as Kentucky Bluegrass, promoting the track with the parenthetical, Serious Banjo, you'd have been given the same response. Your inaccurate description and use of overly enthusiastic promotional language kind of over-sold the actual quality of the track and, given the perceived influence of SHM, pretty much earned the response it was given.

Progressive House is a dead genre. The term, Progressive affixed to almost any genre of music (House, Trance, Dubstep, Breakbeat, Rock et al) automatically arouses contempt. It's an over-used term that doesn't really mean anything, anymore - least of all, what it used to mean, which even when it meant something, didn't mean all that much. Since then, it's been abused by marketing professionals to confer associations with innovation and newness. But really, I could call my writing, progressive, and it would still be pretentious word-smithing which awkwardly over-reaches a grasp for its subject that the dumb-ass author never had a full understanding of, in the first place.

Your song is not that good. The lead is shrill, too loud, and looped to two measures; it's crazy-making. There is no bass-line to speak of - none - zero - where is it? It's not in this song. The music bed, if you call it that, is equally bereft of anything innovative, not really playing any real chords, let alone anything in any particular key. This music is derivative. It sounds like SHM's "One (Your Name)", only minus the harmonic variations that make its hook, that is twice as long as yours, somewhat more palatable, at full length. The quote from Toy Story is cliche'.

There is no percussive progression, which has me wondering what you thought the term, progressive meant and/or pertained to. The break is next to useless and completely unnecessary. The second lead line, coming in after the drop, is out of key with the first lead line; which is sort of curious since the song appears not to be rooted to a particular key until the second lead comes in and mucks everything up.

The best thing about this song is the mix. Even though there are parts that are way too loud and the song is pretty awful, over-all, you seem to have an ear for not completely screwing things up by brick-walling the master. It's got some nice separation between instruments and the kick isn't over-whelming. While you still over-compressed it and while it suffers from just about every deficit I've ever been guilty of, myself, the mix actually had clarity and dynamics that go completely unattended to by a lot of producers. So, kudos, on that point.

I disagree with you here, but that's fine. It's not really that big of a deal.

This is actually a very helpful critique, and I thank you for it. I'm going to take into account everything you've said into future work. And yes, I know I oversold it, but I do it for two reasons: A. To bring attention (shallow, but it works) and B. To get brutally honest critiques like yours; ones which I can actually use to improve. So I thank you for the critique, it really was helpful.
